WOW. All i have to say is that apparently Tomas Vanek was used as the comparison of worth and not Sidney Crosby...

I cannot believe that Sid the Kid and Malkin are signed at 8.7 a year, and staal got 8.25... Yeah he\'s great, and he\'s a franchise player, and he\'s young, but no way I\'d put him in the same (8 million +) category as ovechkin, crosby, and malkin.

I think a heatley or spezza type contract would have been a bit more appropriate...

    wow wow wow...

I agree with Lank, but I think this is more revealing of how cheap Cros and Malkin signed for.

Then again, with the way the cap continues to rise, half way through this deal it may look like a bargain...

This is why I\'m not entirely sure why radulov would have gone to russia for as cheap as he did... at RFA following this season, he\'d fetch at least 5-6 million. Teams are ridiculously overpaying for YOUTH these days. Just look in tampa bay, calgary, and san jose... Lecav, Iginla, and Thorton are some of the best players (better than staal) in the game, and none of them are making anywhere near 8 million.

just goes to show that us poolies and fantasy jocks aren\'t the only ones that sometimes over value \"potential.\"

    ---

I agree that if the cap continues to rise, this could be a deal, but in uncertain economic times, I\'m not completely sold that the cap will go up following this season. If it does, I can\'t imagine the type of increase we\'ve seen up until now...

Not only that, but the CBA needs to either be resigned or re-done within the next year or so (i think), and who knows what the cap picture will look like after that?

All things considered, it\'s not BAD by any means (given current market standards and practices)... but it\'s probably about $750,000 more per year than I had anticipated...

if he returns to the 100 point center, it is a good deal. Paid a premium because he is the focal point of that entire franchise.

    Yep. Completely agree with that...

Franchise players definitely get the coin... at least everywhere but Florida... The panthers handle their franchise players by just running them out of town.

Prettymuch. Right now he\'s not in the same tier of player as Ovechkin or Crosby but he\'s not far off from being worth this kind of contract. He led all scorers last year from about 2 weeks before the deadline until the end of the season and his two-way play is much better then it was the season he recorded 100 points. If he continues that pace he\'s easily worth this kind of contract. If not the team at least locked up its franchise player long-term.
