McFadden breaks elbow trying to save cell phone

Darren McFadden's push to hold off rookie Ezekiel Elliott and retain the starting running back job entering the season has suffered a severe setback.

McFadden underwent surgery for a broken right elbow Tuesday morning and is expected to miss at least two months. Head coach Jason Garrett announced that the club anticipates that McFadden will return in training camp and there's a possibility he'll be ready for the opener on Sept. 11 against the New York Giants.

"I don't want to put too many timetables on it, but they said the surgery went well and the overarching theme was a couple of months,'' Garrett said. "We'll see how he responds to everything.

"But we do anticipate him being back at some point in training camp and possibly being able to play in the opener.''

Garrett said McFadden suffered the injury in an accident at his home over the Memorial Day weekend. The running back took part in organized team activities and didn't say a word.

The first the club heard that something was wrong was when McFadden informed the training staff at the end of last week that the elbow didn't feel right.
