    Default Nick Schmaltz

He's been passed over in our draft for a few years, but now I'm considering him. How would you guys rank him with respect to this years draft eligible forwards?

I would probably rank him in the 8-12 range and fowards-wise, after Nylander (Matthews, Laine, Puljujärvi, Tkachuk, Dubois, Nylander). Jost and McLeod are interesting as well as some other names, but since your team is competing now, Schmaltz becomes more interesting as he should be ready to make the jump to the pros sooner than later.

I would peg Brown/Jost/Keller/McLeod ahead of Schmaltz. I really like the guy and he is a fantastic playmaker but at the same time, he would still need to pass Anisimov on the depth chart when he jumps to the NHL. I'd say he's still a few years away from relevance and I would take those mentioned above ahead of him as they will likely have less of a depth chart to leap over.

Anisimov is a UFA though. Unless Chicago signs him at a bargain for multiple years, I'm not too worried about him being in the way of Schmaltz' progression. I'm pretty sure Schmaltz will be in the AHL next year and I would not be surprised if he does get called up to play a depth role and get experience throughout the year. He's not as flashy as Jost and not as fast as McLeod but his vision and playmaking ability combined with his ''closer to the pros'' status makes him very interesting IMO.

Anisimov is re-signed long term (5 more years) with the Blackhawks.

He would need to sign a contract first and its not a certainty he will leave North Dakota just yet.

I guess both of those go hand in hand, but ya, you are right

I don't see him burning the AHL in his first year like Rantanen did this past season but he should still be part of the top rookies if he does make the jump next year.

Does anyone think he'd ever be moved away from C? That would obviously affect his value in some leagues that count FOW....I'm considering moving him in a deal for Vrana, who's not a C.

I own schmaltz and to me if he were available I would take him after Brown Keller Jost so 10th IMO, I'm not big on the defencemen this year. The hawks will extend Panarian, they have too right? So in the top 6 you have Toews, Hossa, Aminsov, Panarian and Kane. To me he's that third line player like TT, the one hope is that Hinstrova or however you spell it hits as a two way playmaker. The problem with TT on the hawks he got a shot on line 1 early but it was his first full year and kept trying to set up Toews and Hossa rather than being the trigger man. So back to my thought he's 10th on the forward list this year IMO.

The way the Hawks continuously cycle in cheaper contracts to fit under the cap, tells me Schmaltz will be given a chance quicker than most predictions around here.

The Chicago Blackhawks agreed to a three-year contract with forward Nick Schmaltz on Sunday.
