June 24th - Second Domino falls... "With the 1st pick in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft, the Toronto Maple Leafs select... Auston Matthews." (by the way... where do they announce Auston to be from... ZSC Lions? or USDP?)

Has there ever been a 1st over all pick hailing form the ZSC Lions? That's pretty big.

I still don't understand why Stamkos would want to join a team that is rebuilding for another 5 years or so??

Oh I’m not saying it’s a fair trade. But if Yotes want Matthews they will have to overpay and by a lot.

OEL + 7^th, and maybe like a 2/3 round pick next yr for 1^st overall is “fair” to the point where Toronto isn’t in any need to trade the pick, so they’ll take it. But adding Domi makes it a trade where Toronto can’t/won’t say no to.

Toronto isn’t selling, Yotes are buying. Thus sellers’ market.

It was meant that Toronto wouldn’t be going to Yotes and say what do you want for the 1^st overall. If a trade would to happen, it would be the Yotes approaching Toronto. Thus Yotes Buying.

No THE leafs need to draft an goalie with the capability to be a long term starter in the NHL and then let him build with this core to that when the core reaches their prime, he is coming into his own. You can't expect to develop a core of forwards and D with no goaltending support and that the team is just going to have one fall into their lap through trade or FA.

Also these Matt Murray to the Leafs rumors now due to "potential expansion" are already getting old. Leafs lose some of their young core if they want a goalie of that magnitude.

If Murray plays solidly next year absolutely they'll look to move Fleury (I'd move Fleury anyways). I'm just going off of rumors I heard the last couple of days.

The Florida Panthers would probably disagree with you. They didn't seem to mind bringing in Luongo to help with their rebuild and he was well past 31 years of age when he went there.

If they draft a goalie this yr, an elder goalie may be what they need.

The last consistent goalies the Leafs had: Belfour, Cujo, Giguere, Potvin, and Fuhr. The pressure may be too much for younger goalies. They get a vet to backstop till the rookie comes in and takes over.

However I really think goalie is the thing you “address last”. By this I mean, get a goalie you think could be your future, but don’t fully fret on things. Star goalies can come from out of nowhere in the 5^th round. Matt Murray, 21yrs old, 83^rd overall pick, the next starting goalie for the penguins for yrs. Holtby, 93^rd overall, arguably top 3 goalie in the league. Lundy 205^th overall.

The development timeline typically from fastest to longest is Forward, D, Goalie. So you don’t want to leave goalie out of it until it’s too late, but goalie is the biggest hit and miss positon where you could be banking on Bernier (1^st rounder) to be your next goalie, but Sparks a 7^th rounder could take it. It’s quite a crap shoot.

I agree. Leafs can get a solid goalie without needing to pay too much.

Goalies should be fairly cheaply available next trade deadline too.. if the expansion rules only allow many teams to keep one veteran goalie.
A couple teams in the NHL... DET (Mrazek) and STL (Allen) should be looking towards their futures.
This may free up Howard (DET) and Elliott (STL).
I also wouldn't be shocked to see COL give Calvin Pickard a shot... making Varly available.

All of Mrazek, Allen, and Pickard are RFAs this summer.

Also, maybe he was nuts at the time... but it was reported by multiple sources not too long ago that Snow offered his entire draft (including #4 overall) to move up 2 spots.
And was TURNED DOWN.
Just one example but I believe moving up 7 to 1, especially this year, would cost a fortune. Way more than just Domi, and I love Domi.

No i'm a guy who doesnt confuse fantasy with reality.
Im not saying the leafs should make that move just suggesting something more reasonable then the leafs getting OEL, #7 and an additional 1st
