he couldnt get traded before because the sens were too poor/cheap.
leafs will obviously take a bad contract back, and any "cap circumvention" will be done by the team that acquires cowen.
something like cowen for bickell + pick/prospect, then the hawks buyout cowen and gain some cap space.

No he wasn't traded before because nobody has any interest in actually playing him especially at that price.
They took on phaneufs contract so they weren't cheap in that sense, they just wanted a piece to play and not rot in the minors or press box.
if the Hawks get Cowen they'll probably play him since their third pair is horrid. And there's no reason for the Hawks to add a pick or prospect
my guess is he's not traded today.
