Standard versus Snaking for League startup Draft

Hey All,

I'm having a poll in my new 30 team league to decide if we should do standard versus snaking for the start up draft. its a very deep league so its a big decision.

I was hoping the experienced GM's on here could help discuss the pros and cons of each style to help everyone make an informed decision.

I think a completely new draft should be snaking. Why do you continuously reward the 1 pick based on a lottery system, I would quit in a heart beat. In a league that is year 2 and beyond I prefer standard as a way of balance. Plus in a really deep league the bad teams gain a lot of pick assets.

yeah I already have standard set up for the entry drafts for the prospects. I personally prefer snaking for the reason you stated. thanks!

I thought so as well but didn't want to presume so since I forgot to state it in the rules before over half the league joined. Don't want to ruffle any feathers before we even get going.

It's a must.
I can't see how the #1 overall pick slot would seem to always get rewarded each round by being first in that round.

Snake for entry, standard for redraft/prospect draft etc

Snake for parity. For prospects you do standard also for parity reasons.

Start-up draft should definitely be snake.
This isn't even debatable.

The inaugural prospect draft should also be snake... though I don't believe ANY new league should even have an inaugural draft.

When a league opens, I believe that there should only be one draft.
If a 2015 prospects draft is separated, then whoever gets the #1 & #2 pick probably have a substantial advantage over other teams... because of the separation of McDavid & Eichel.

McDavid is a top 5 pick in any new league (all players).
Eichel is probably a top 30 pick in any new league (all players).
So if an inaugural prospect draft is separated, then whoever gets those two guys is essentially getting an EXTRA first round pick.
An extra first round pick for two teams in a new league - ask yourself if that sounds fair?

THEN... you have a standard prospect draft... with the worst team drafting #1 in each round.

Give that man a cookie! Totally agree with this way of drafting. It also demands a little more strategy in your draft (i.e. do I want to favor young blue chips or older good players?

yeah that's what I am doing with the single startup draft, I agree that people should have to prioritize if they want a prospect or a roster player when making their team from scratch.

I agree that the initial start up draft has to be a snake draft.

I also agree with P7 that there should only be one draft. I realize it takes longer to do it but I prefer it that way as well.
