Keith OR Pietrangelo OR Carlson?

Hey all,

I've been going back and forth on this for quite some time now and after reading all the info on these boards about the three guys mentioned in the Thread Title, I still have not made a final decision.

This will be my 4th year into a keeper league (details in the sig) where I've kept Pietrangelo each year. We can only keep 1 Defencemen per year, unless you use your wild-card for a 2nd (but I'm going with a 2nd C Kopitar). But after last season, Carlson is appearing much more enticing to me, especially when it comes to multi-cats. Carlson had 55points last season while Keth and Pietrangelo had 45 and 44, respectively. Also Carlson blocks more shots than those guys.

Am I answering my own question? Should I keep Carlson this year? Or do I stick with Pietrangelo? What about Keith, who some seasons acts like an extra forward when it comes to his point production?

Just need some friendly advice to convince me one way or the other.

For me this is just between Keith and Carlson. Pietrangelo is a great defender, but i don't see the 60 point upside the two others have.

So to answer your question, i would want Keith for my hockey team, but Carlson for fantasy. He should match Keith's points or top them and give you some nice additional stats. He is also 7 years younger

Jon Carlson is the easy choice for me as the best option.

Carlson due to blocks being a stat. You need that from your dmen.

Agree with this except for the last paragraph - Keith is 32, Pietrangelo is 25, in a keeper I think it's pretty clear Pietrangelo is the choice but that's because I think we have not really seen what he can do yet. I do think he has potential 60-pt value but even if he doesn't, he'll be enough of a multicat contributor to make up for it. People focus on the two great point seasons Keith had (61 and 69) but other than those anomalies, he's been basically a mid 40-s point guy. Meanwhile, Pietrangelo had 46 pts last year but 51 pts on two prior occasions.

For me it's a bit closer between Pietrangelo and Carlson given the age proximity, and you can't go wrong with either choice, but I agree Carlson is the better bet to be the big beast between the two in a multi-cat and likely will outpoint Pietrangelo.

Great advice, and very true. Fantasy is often quite different than reality and this could be a perfect example.

Don't let the cruise ship rock your judgement here. Take Carlson. We'll see a steady output of 52-58 points from him and his blocks, shots, ppp and adequate hits make him the go to guy here. Even in a points only, I'd take JC.

Carlson. This kid is already a household name and is going to have a very good season now that he's the clear #1 D in Washington. I like Pietrangelo but I feel he is slightly overvalued. You should be able to get a nice offer for him. I keep Carlson and try to move the other 2. Keith is a great defenceman but he's not putting up the points like he did a few years ago. He's more all-around now, and thats not a bad thing. I wouldn't keep him over the other two options in a league where you can only keep one (or use a wild card on a 2nd)

Haha no sir, though it is quite rocky at the moment (we're currently off the coast of Ireland). I am going for Carlson and I may have someone looking at Keith for their keeper defenceman so i could get a pick out of it before our draft next month.

IMO, the best strategy to use with respect to d-men is protect the ones that best match up with your roto stats. Every scenario is different but in your case, I feel that Carlson matches up the best of the 3.
