i really don't think AA would give up what he did for the best SS (if not best def on short list) just to flip him for pitching help. goins is a nice bench guy. He's not a starter for a team with playoffs on the mind. This deal opens up the possibility of moving a lower end prospect plus EE for a middle of rotation pitcher. with Saunders back in a month (eye roll) we will have our position players set. Hopefully they add a starter to make September matter.

This is a good summary of the deal http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/troy-...ing-strengths/

It touches on how this is prolly giving up less than what Cueto was traded for in return for a player going to play in 4x more games. I like the approach of giving up less to win 7-6w because it’s just the same as 2-1w, but someone pitching the 5th day other than Doubront is ideal.

If they make the playoffs, they will have a ridiculous TV rating. Imagine the best offense in recent history going up against no legitimate ace in the AL East. And only Cueto, Keuchel, and Santiago as the only AL opponents.

That's what first popped into my head when I heard about this. The only difference... that team actually had decent pitching.

This only makes sense if they flip EE for a starter. They need a starter badly. Tulo can then slide into cleanup. Smoak and Collabello can alternate at 1st and DH. Edwin really does seem like the logical guy to be traded at this point.
Tulo needs to have a healthy dose of DH slot. With him and Turf, I’d be putting him on the DH more often than Edwin right now.

Maybe we see Pompey traded in the next day or so. Pillar is 26 (turning 27 in January), so Pompey can be traded away.

Or do you keep Travis in the 9 hole and go:
    Tulo, Donaldson, Bautista, Edwin?
I'm really interested to see the how lineup shakes out as well. I think they'd be best to keep the order the same and have Tulo slide Reyes' spot at lead-off.
I like the idea of having high OBP guys Tulo and Donaldson getting on base a lot ahead of Bautista and EE. I'd leave Travis in the 9-hole so that the second time thru the order you have him as a second lead-off guy. I read a good article about how Maddon is doing this in Chicago, batting their rookie Addison Russell 9th (pitcher bats 8th). Maddon says it's less pressure on the rookie and he's better protected. Seems like a similar situation here solid hitters 1 and 2, power 3 and 4 and then the 2nd time thru you have a solid average guy in Travis at 9 to get things going.

Debatable whether to bat Tulo and Donaldson 1-2 or 2-1. Tulo has a higher OBP and slugging then Donaldson but both are great in either spot IMO. Don't know which one has more all out speed.

I wont be surprised to see Martin leading off now. After that, I am not too sure.

There’s a lot of “The Score” articles having it:
    Travis, Donaldson, Bautista, Tulo, Edwin.

Tulo has a lot of pop, and slotting him in the 1 hole would almost be a waste of his power. But then again so was thinking Donaldson at the 2 was a waste. We’ll have to wait till Wednesday at the earliest to see Tulo, but LaTroy will be in the lineup tonight.

I went and looked it up and Travis has a .302 Average and .360 OBP which are both impressive and good enough to be #1 hitters. If he can handle the pressure of leading-off and Gibbons has confidence in him then maybe this trade gives him a chance to be prove he's a true lead-off guy. I thought he did some lead-off hitting when Reyes was hurt early this year and had struggles, but as a rookie maybe those struggles were inevitable.

All of Donaldson, Tulo and Bautista have very similar OBP and slugging numbers, but I would be surprised to see Tulo (12HR higher average) hitting behind Bautista (21HR). My thought is I'd much rather have Tulo on base with Bautista hitting than the other way round. Can anyone comment on Tulo's base running speed? Travis is quit quick and Donaldson/Bautista are certainly not slow. I expect to see a lot of hit-and-run ball from Toronto in the top of the lineup.

He’s not a slug, but he isn’t a speed demon. He has never been a base stealer. His best yr he stole 20 bases, but got caught 11 times. I can’t even think of someone as fast as him. He’s 6’3” 214lbs, so he’s got great range (based on height), but he’s like Donaldson. Nothing amazing based on speed I’d say.

    BTW Donaldson is 6’0” 220lbs

On MLB15 they have Donaldsons speed as 52, and Tulo’s speed as 54.

You can quickly pick it off during a video from Bardown where they use MLB15 to see if the videogame would allow the trade.

who knows really. Tulo wasn't asked about the trade (which the old gm said they would ask for his opinion if traded i think), so maybe he's a little upset. Taking his time to get there and saying bye to everyone. There may be more loose ends to tie up for a franchise player vs Hawkins
