A complementary player is a player who is inserted to try to bring the whole line together to produce better. Toews and Hossa played almost 94% of their ES minutes together. Saad, Versteeg, Bickell and Sharp all saw time with that duo. Toews and Hossa play great together, then Quenneville is tasked with finding another forward who can complement those two!

I think Saad is a great player in his own right, but Toews and Hossa control the play on that top line, not Saad. They didn't ignore him, or shoot spitballs at him, or call him names, but theres only so many puck touches to go around.

In my opinion (this will be great if someone tells me Foligno or Hartnell is better), Saad is the most skilled winger on the Blue Jackets. He is going to be given every opportunity to be a scorer on the top line. Put RyJo and Saad together for 94% of the time and watch them flourish.
    I'm also face palming.

I am too. I don't think I have ever heard an argument about a hockey player's point production being limited because his linemates were too good and the player wasn't the focus of the offense. Increased puck possession and shots leads to more points for everyone. All across fantasy hockey players' values change based on who they play with.

LOL- it's a good thing Saad is getting away from Toews, Kane, Hossa, and Keith so his production can go up.

well I agree that you could get more points being on a team with not as many stars, because you have the puck more and you are controlling the play more. When you have a loaded top six like Chicago, a player who is behind them might be buried and would flourish elsewhere.

But Saad has primarily been in the top 6 the last two seasons

I agree if Saad had been playing on the 3rd line with Shaw and Bickell the last two seasons but that has not been the case. Saad has been on lines with some of the best players in hockey.

Now if you want to say his points will increase as he matures and gets PP1 time, fine. That makes perfect sense. But to say he'll have more points since he'll receive better scoring chances since he's the premiere option, that is a huge stretch.

alright but he could still get more minutes in Columbus, and there's less stars to take points way from him.

I don't think he will though. Not a big Saad guy...

What Saad should see is an increase in PP time which could help his production but his ES situation for sure won't be any better than it was in CHI.

More minutes would definitely help. Saad had 17:15 min/gm last year and getting closer to 19 would help. I would think he gets PP1 time but he still received over 2 min of PP time per game last year. Foligno received only 20 sec more per game last year so I don't know how big of a difference that will make.

But I disagree with the premise of stars taking away points. Stars create points for their linemates. This is why we all want to know who is playing on Tavares's or Crosby's line.

sure but it doesn't always lead to more points for the player lining up with them. Especially if the team has a really good offensive defenseman getting a lot of the assists. One winger will be left out.

often times people are baited into drafting Crosby's winger and then they end up disappointed.

Saad got overpaid for what his past was. But the lines are gonna look odd right now. It’s just a matter of how pre-season chemistry shakes out.

    Foligno-RyJo-Jenner
    Hartnell-Duby-Saad
    Cavert-Wennberg-Atkinson
    Clarkson-Campbell-Boll

I believe the GM has gone on record as saying the intention of bringing Saad over was for him to play with RyJo and for them to build around these 2 in the future.

I thought that was a strange thing to say, considering you've already got a 27 year old winger who combined with RyJo last season for ~150 points.

I would be pissed if I were Foligno...

I’d be insulted if I was Foligno, kinda given the shaft in that explanation of the Saad dealio. But a Foligno-RyJo-Saad would be a solid line. Boon on the 2nd. But I would have thought a line of Duby Hartnell and Saad would have been a fun forecheck hard hitting line. A nice grind change of pace kinda thing.

Don't Foligno/Saad play the same wing?

Saad is a hell of a player, but saadly he's overpaid so in a salary league it kinda hurts, in real life as well. I'd rather have Nyquist at 4,75 than him at 6 thats for sure
