Nobody thought Bautista or EE would be where they are. Now along comes Justin Smoak, former top prospect showing signs maybe just maybe he reaches his potential. Not saying he's close yet but I'm seeing little indicators he may be on his way.

Two games ago he was batting .244/.340/.402. He has an elevated BABIP, ISO and HR/FB%. He's better than he was last year but he's still a platoon guy who needs to be protected from everyday at bats. Nothing to see here except a productive bench bat.

That was my take from yesterday. He has done the on-off, hot-cold thing before.Smoak has put together tantalizing hot streaks in the past, so a speculative leap of faith could reward in the short term, especially for those in need of a counting stat boost. As long as Smoak is hitting, he’ll find close to everyday at-bats at first base and likely in the heart of the order.
