This is liable to be one of those signings where he comes over for a year or two, and then disappears into oblivion. Kind of like Roman Cervenka or Damien Brunner (who by the way came over when he signed with the same New Jersey Devils).

Kalinin isn't even as good as Cervenka or Brunner. I wouldn't get my hopes very high.

Apparently from what I have read, he has never had much for offensive upside but is a solid "heart and soul" kinda player. He was the captain of his KHL team. He would be a pretty decent bottom six type of player. Maybe it's just me but the Devils are already full of those and need the offensive type of players. I guess you take what you can get.
He also suffered a pretty serious head injury in the KHL playoffs last year too from what I have read. I guess he took a nasty hit to the head and then went into convulsions on the ice. Yikes! Thus all the medical tests.

I believe Brunner came over to the Wings first. Then went as a UFA to Jersey the next season.

Cervenka at least had an offensive resume that made him worth the shot.
Don't know Kalinen at all, but wondering if he's perhaps Komarov-lite for the Devils? Agree they're already heavy in that area, but perhaps this lets them move a Ruutu/Zubrus?
Here's hoping he pans out - Devils need some serious good fortune.

The Devils are in need of healthy bodies especially up front. If Kalinin can play a regular shift in the NHL then its a good move for both parties.
Consider Sim Hockey because guys who play shutdown minutes, deflect shots and clear creases build championships. Yet in fantasy they litter the unwanted UFA lists.

I picked him up earlier this week as a speculative add, hoping to learn more about him before our entry draft comes up and I need to clear roster space.
If he can play a regular shift, even if he's not a star, he's worth a fantasy pickup in some deep, deep leagues.
