Is tanking a good thing? Does it work?

Personally, I think the whole Kadri thing is, at least in part, a very convenient pro-tanking move. Sure you suspend him one game, but then you abruptly announce he's suspended for two more games? To me it's pretty obvious that doing that sends Kadri a bigger message than ever, but also makes it more difficult for the Leafs to win those games he's not playing given that he's becoming a vital part of their offense.

I'm sorry... We are talking about Kadri right? Have you been watching him play? In the line up or out... leafs aren't winning and Kadri is definitely no earth shattering game changer.

Can't argue with that. Toronto is a mess.

What about Kessel? Lots of Leaf fans are critical of him.

A big ditto from me. He could actually help them achieve their goal if he was in the lineup.

He helps them more than whomever is replacing him in the lineup, that's for sure, notwithstanding his overall mediocre play this year. My point is it doesn't hurt at all from a tanking perspective to have him sit a few games - I would bet big money that all of the bottom-feeder teams, and Shanny/Nonis/Leafs are no different, are willing to look at any mechanism to subtly tank. It could be putting lightly injured guys on the shelf, etc. And that's the point of this thread and my post. If you want to argue benching Kadri for an additional two games after already benching him 1 for the same indiscretion is only about punishing him, that's fair enough, but I ain't buying it.

So here is a good question. Based solely on whether a team has tried to tank or not, which of the current bottom 5 teams most deserves to win the McDavid lottery. The current bottom 5 are Buffalo, Edmonton, Carolina, Toronto & Arizona. Personally, I think Carolina has tried its best to win without much success and may "deserve" #1 more than the others.
