Default Brodeur Finally Done, Was He the Greatest?

I used to be hard core Patrick Roy, but in writing about the two, Martin Brodeur is certainly in the conversation as to who is the greatest NHL goalie of all time.

For what it's worth, I think Roy and Marty are in the conversation but I still think Domik Hasek is the greatest goalie of all time. Imagine how his numbers would have looked if he had started playing in the NHL at a younger age.

    Hasek for me.

It was hard not to include Hasek in the overall comparison, but I wanted to narrow it down to Brodeur and Roy. Hasek was incredible, for sure. Thanks!

    Great read , thanks!

    Sometimes I wonder , is Brodeur over-rated or under-rated?
Then I read this and am reminded that Brodeur cannot be denied
of what he's proven to hockey.

His play on the world stage is what may be considered the tipping factor
to put him at the top of the list as the best ever , yet many of us look
soley at the NHL stats and Roys' stats are incredible.

Apples & Oranges I'd sayn , depends on your "taste" i guess.

If you just want to compare Brodeur to Roy, then I would probably say Marty over Patrick. But to answer your question in your title, Hasek is the greatest.

I think that impact on the game that they both had is really remarkable. But, it is hard to point-blank call one or the other the absolute "greatest" Thanks!

Wow, a lot of love for Hasek. I might need to re-think this whole topic. Thanks!

I don't think goaltending has a single stand-out that is Gretzky-like. Brodeur wins most of the statistical awards but I never saw him as the underdog that had to pull wins out of his ass. To me the greatest goalie of all time becomes a debate between eras which quickly becomes a giant ball of mud. Plenty of names from the past deserve to be in the conversation.

Naming the best of all goalies is an effort in futility. Good goaltending stats are symbiotic with good team defense and Brodeur enjoyed a very solid defense in front of him for the vast majority of his career (Stevens, Niedermayer, Daneyko).

I don't think you can say the same for Roy. Certainly not for Hasek.

Brodeur's statistical accomplishments are immense and are likely to go unchallenged for a long, long time.

If "best of all time" means "has unbeatable numbers", it's Brodeur's title. If best means singularly talented, I think arguments can be made for many.

For myself, I like Hasek as the best all-time, precisely because he had a middling team in front of him for years and his numbers suffered accordingly. Plus he didn't get to North America quickly enough.

I don't know if I can agree with that (and I do acknowledge that my profile picture suggests I'm not an impartial voice in the conversation). But if Brodeur wasn't pulling wins out of his ass left and right, the Devils never win 3 cups or become the dominant franchise they were in the 90's and early 2000's.

Brodeur's awards, etc are numerous. I am aware that many feel his team contributed a lot to his success, much more than Patrick Roy's. Can't make thata argument about Hasek, for sure. Probably having been on a consistently winning team would close down the debate in his favor.
