Default Question about Goalie Drafting Strategy

i am about to draft for a 18-team one year league (H2H) and i am wondering what kind of strategy i should apply concerning the goalies.

    the league-setup is as follows:

Roster Positions: C, C, LW, LW, RW, RW, D, D, D, D, Util, G, BN, BN, BN, BN, IR, IR
9 Forwards/Defensemen Stat Categories: Goals (G), Assists (A), Plus/Minus (+/-), Penalty Minutes (PIM), Powerplay Points (PPP), Shots on Goal (SOG), Faceoffs Won (FW), Hits (HIT), Blocks (BLK)
4 Goaltenders Stat Categories: Wins (W), Saves (SV), Save Percentage (SV%), Shutouts (SHO)
    Min Goalie Appearances: 2

since there is only one G spot and 4 goalie cats, my gut tells me to draft an elite starter (rask, lundquvist, price) and in later rounds a lower-tier starter who gets a lot of saves and goes along well with not too many conflicting starts. (the same night tool is my friend). this should give me a real good shot at winning the goalie cats.
what do you guys think, is this a good strategy?
or is it maybe wiser to pass on goalies in the earlier rounds and try to go with some cheap goalies? after all, its just 4 out of 13 categories.
unfortunatetly i will know my drafting position just 30 mins before draft. so maybe i will miss out on the top goalies anyhow, because i also dont want to take them too early.

What type of league is this? H2H or rotisserie?

In rotisserie, I agree, you need a solid goalie to stay near the top in the goalie stats. With 18 teams, you have to draft your nr.1 early.

In H2H on the other hand, even the best goalie won't guarantee you'll win your weekly matchups, if your other skaters aren't good enough. And on top of that, on any given week your star goalie might lose the matchup against an average goalie, who's simply having a great week. So in H2H I would try to get some good offensive forwards in the early rounds and wouldn't even mind if all the others pick their goalies first. Even if you were the last team to pick a goalie, you can still get a decent one (especially with saves as a category). Try to win as many forwards/defensemen cats as possible (pick centers with wing eligibility for FOW, use defensemen for hits/blocks/PIM), don't worry about your goalies. You will NOT lose the goalie cats every week. the same way you will not win them 4:0 every week, even with Rask or Lundquist as your starter.

Anyways, this is what I'd do... good luck!
    12 teams, Yahoo H2H, daily, keep 5.

    3C, 3LW, 3RW, 6D, 2G, 5BN, IR+
G, A, P, +/-, PIM, PPP, SHP, GWG, SOG, FW, HIT, BLK
    W, GAA, SA, SV%, SHO

    C: McDavid, MacKinnon, Eichel, Pettersson
    LW: M.Tkachuk (+RW), Zucker (+RW), Coleman (+RW), N.Foligno (+C)
    RW: Kucherov, Svechnikov (+LW), W.Nylander (+C), Kassian
D: Karlsson, Hughes,Doughty, Ekblad, Hronek, McNabb, Cernak
    G: Lehner, Grubauer, Francouz
    IR+:

I'm not a fan of high drafting goalies in H2H leagues.
Even a guy like Lundqvist could have a 3-game week that might be Tuesday, Friday, Saturday.
If he shits the bed on Tuesday (vs. PIT, say), then he's only got one start on Friday or Saturday to make that up.

For me, you've got 9 skaters cats and 4 goalie cats. 13 cats.
You want to win 7 to move on in H2H.
So target your 7 and win them every week: G, A, PIM, PPP, SOG, FOW, HIT, BLK. That's 8.

HIT/BLK are easy to win if you target them, but you don't want to clog up a valuable roster slot in this league with any player that doesn't get offense.
    It's too shallow.
Therefore you need to get those "built-in", which places a premium on getting yourself "across-the-board" defenseman.

    What site do you use?
    How many teams?

I'd be drafting yourself 3 across-the-board defensemen in the first 8 rounds.
    Probably something like this:

    Round 2. Shea Weber
    Round 5. Mark Giordano
    Round 7. Dion Phaneuf

These guys are somewhere around 40, 90, 130 on the Yahoo! draft board, so you should be able to sneak them at this point of a 12-team draft (assumed).
In the other first 10 rounds, I'd go with 7 boss skaters.
And you'll need to roster 5 centers to win FOW against EVERY team in the league.
This means that you need 3 centers (your UTIL will be center, always) and 2 wing-eligibile skaters that take big faceoffs.
Antoine Vermette (C/LW - ARI) is a great one for your LW in maybe round 11 or 12.

But don't sleep on boss FOW guys like Patrice Bergeron (round 4-ish) or Mikko Koivu (round 9-ish).

    Goalies, I'd draft them late.
I made a goalie tier chart yesterday.
If you have 18-teams in your league needing ONLY one G, you can probably late-draft the MIN tandem and they'll serve you as an "average" goalie pair, which is way above your draft value.

Better to have the MIN goalies then say Steve Mason (PHI) or Mike Smith (ARI) or Roberto Luongo (FLA)... all Tier IV true #1 goalies that won't do you any big favours, less wins/game than MIN goalies.

Your 4 bench should be made up of specialists.
One back-up goalie required (the MIN back-up, if you take that strategy).
Reserve one slot to "stream" in players with good schedules, especially guys that could boost you with a packed week of games, boost you in a H2H win in PIM or HIT or BLK.
No reason to lose that category unless you are playing with really, really, really sharp GMs.

    Good luck.

Thank you so much Pengwin for this awesome post.
Now the settings have been changed to 2 Util and 3 Bench spots, but I guess that doesn't change your approach.
Although maybe using one of 3 Bench spots for a backup isn't great.
So what about trying to take two cheap goalies in later rounds that are playing lots of games and facing lots of shots?
    Like Hiller/Pavelec?
