    Default Jays make a trade!

Back to their good ole trade partners, the Phillies!

The Toronto Blue Jays made a deal just before the Aug. 31 deadline for waiver trades, acquiring outfielder John Mayberry Jr. from the Philadelphia Phillies for minor-league infielder Gustavo Pierre.

Mayberry, 30, is a career .242 hitter with a .304 on-base percentage and .733 OPS in 500 games with the Phillies. His best season was 2011, when he batted .273 with 15 homers, a .341 OBP and .854 OPS. His numbers have declined since then.

A 6-foot-6 right-handed batter, Mayberry will join the Jays on Tuesday in Tampa, the club said in a release. He has been on the disabled list since July 21 with left wrist inflammation and was completing an injury rehab assignment in Triple-A when the trade was announced. Before he was injured, he batted .216 in 63 games for the Phillies.

Mayberry has put up decent numbers against left-handed pitching, batting .272 in 514 plate appearances with an .856 OPS. He has played all three outfield spots and 69 games at first base.

He is eligible for salary arbitration two more seasons after making US$1.6-million this year. He will not reach free agency until 2017.

Mayberry’s father played for 15 years in the majors and spent 1978 through 1981 with the Blue Jays.

Pierre, 22, has hit .260 this season with eight homers, a .281 OBP and .671 OPS between advanced Class-A Dunedin and Double-A New Hampshire. The Jays signed him out of the Dominican Republic when he was 17.

I'm glad they tried to stay away from selling youth for about 2 months. However at 22 and only as high as AA, Pierre can't be a massive prospect. Then again he could be top 10 in the jays system because they have no youth/prospects beside Norris, Stroman, and Sanchez

I don't think he's rated too high but still, these are the types of moves that they should have been making weeks ago.

about 6 weeks ago i was dreading the final bit of the schedule, now it's a God send. 28 games left, if they win 2/3rds of the games there's a chance. Finish off 88-76. Detroit and Seattle have to go below 0.500, and NYY and Cleveland cant go above 0.600 ball.
