    I think that's about where most people thought he'd end up. Not a bad deal for a great 2nd line center.

    Good deal. Anything 5M or lower is just about right for him.

    I'd still like to see some more production since 5 million seems a little high for a 45-50 point player, but he fills that 2C role pretty well and 5 mil is roughly the going rate for those guys.

    and yet Bolland makes more than him....yikes.

    This was a good signing - Brassard also get a limited no-trade clause in the pact as well.

    Its tough to pay that to someone that hasn't shown the production of a 2nd line center, but at the same time the NYR got nice discounts off Kreider, and Zuc, and with Richard gone they were between a rock and a hard place so salary isn't so bad, but the term is troublesome. If Brassard flourishes then its a steal, but if he fails then you're on the hook for 5 years at 5 million. Tough to trade. Personally I would have gone 3 years, but we'll see how it works out for both parties.

    I think it's a good signing for both parties. It's a bit on the high end, but fair I think.

    Not quite sure I would label Brassard as a "great" 2nd line center by any means. Much like Gagner, too much money for a guy who has never hit 50 pts in a regular season in his career.

    I believe the Rangers specifically wanted to sign Brassard long-term because Brassard's arbitration request was $4.95M (based on Elliotte Friedman's tweet), so the Rangers probably could have signed him for 2-3 years at $4.5M if they wanted but they chose to give him longer term, hoping it's a bargain at the end of it. Who knows how it ends up but that's what I think happened.

    Brassard's all-around game is superior to Gagner's IMO.

    definitely expensive, no doubt about it. however, how many UFA years did this buy up? brassard has played 6 full-ish seasons so i assume he was only 1 year away from being a UFA, 4 of 5 UFA years at 5m for a second line center is not all that bad all things considered as long as he puts up points with solid 2-way play.

    pays to be an above average center or dman these days;

    Agreed - a bit too much for Brassard. I think 50 pts is his ceiling, but he'll be in the 42-45 pt range most years.

    That is exactly right. The contract buys out 4 years of UFA. It is a tad high but considering Bolland just got 5.5M for 5 years this is not a terrible contract. Rangers needed Brassard because they have no one who could step in and be #2C so they overpaid by maybe 500,000. I can live with that.

    Heavily front-loaded deal. Similar to Ennis' contract except Brassard will get more money in third year of the deal which is why the cap hit is a bit higher.

    Brassard is now droppable in cap leagues that use actual yearly salary instead of cap hit.
