Phoenix Coyotes General Manager Don Maloney announced that the Coyotes have signed goaltender David Aebischer to a one-year contract. As per club policy, terms of the contract were not disclosed.

In six NHL seasons, Aebischer has collected a record of 106-73-12, a 2.51 goals against average (GAA), and a .912 save percentage (SV%) in 213 career games with Colorado and Montreal. His best season to date came in 2003-04 when he posted a 32-19-9 record, 2.09 GAA, and .924 SV% in 62 games with Colorado. His 32 wins were the 7th most in the NHL and he became the 2nd goaltender in Avalanche history to reach the 30-win plateau in a season.

“With the signing of David Aebischer we have taken the next step in creating depth at the goaltending position,” said Maloney.

Aebischer, 29, registered a 13-12-3 record, 3.17 GAA, and .900 SV% in 32 appearances with Montreal last season. The native of Fribourg, Switzerland was acquired by Montreal from Colorado for Jose Theodore on Mar. 8, 2006.

Aebischer broke into the NHL in 2000-01, collecting a 12-7-3 record, 2.24 GAA, and .903 SV% in 26 games and was a member of the Colorado team that won the Stanley Cup that season.

Prior to reaching the NHL with Colorado, Aebischer spent one season in the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL) and played two full seasons in the American Hockey League (AHL) with Hershey. He compiled a record of 17-10-5 with a 2.45 GAA and .920 SV% in 1998-99 and was named the team’s Rookie of the Year.

Aebischer represented Switzerland at the 2002 and 2006 Winter Olympic Games. He collected a record of 1-0-2 with a 2.10 GAA and .940 SV% in 4 games in Turin in 2006. The 6-foot-1, 187-pound netminder has also competed in 5 World Championships (1998, 1999, 2005, 2006, 2007) and 2 World Junior Championships (1997, 1998). He was named the Best Goaltender at the 1998 World Junior Championships as he helped lead Switzerland to a bronze medal.

Aebischer was selected by Colorado in the 6th round (161st overall) in the 1997 NHL Entry Draft.
