Default Oilers sign Yakimov to 3yr ELC

Edmonton Oilers’ ongoing search for a big centre with skill took an interesting turn this morning, as the organization has officially announced it has come to terms with 19-year-old Russian prospect Bogdan Yakimov.

Selected 83rd overall in the 2013 Draft, the super-sized Yakimov went on to play 33 games in the KHL, connecting for 7 goals and 12 points in limited ice time with his home-town team Nizhnekamsk Neftekhimik. That’s the team Nail Yakupov played for during the most recent NHL lockout, and is the birthplace of both. “Yak2″ (as he is already referred to by many Oilers fans) also represented Russia at the World Junior Hockey Championships.

Yakimov will turn 20 on October 4, just as the new season gets underway. He is almost certain to begin the season in Oklahoma City, and from this distance appears more long-term project than quick fix to the big club’s deficiencies down the middle. But with Yakimov and the equally humongous Jujhar Khaira set to play for the Barons next season, two potential solutions will join the system where the organization can get a first-hand look and control over their development. The two were selected with third-round picks a year apart, but the actual age difference between them is less than two months as their birthdays happened to fall on either side of the September 15 threshold. After extremely different backgrounds to this point, it will be interesting to observe the two mammoth pivots on parallel tracks next fall. If either of them develops into a full-blown NHLer it will be a “big” win for the Oilers.

he will probably needs at least 2 years of AHL seasoning if hes as raw as described in that article. that being said, theres nothing wrong breaking into the nhl as a 23-24 year old when hes ready for a top-6 role. playing center in the NHL is rough as is.

Good for the Oilers they were able to get this done. Yakimov is a couple few years away, and outside of being a super clunky skater the rest of his game is very good. He's actually fairly similar to the Oiler's latest man-crush Leon Draisaitl.

Now they just need to hope he's open to the idea of spending some time in the AHL. But it's a good sign with him signing his ELC so soon.
