Best and most true line in the article - " their money can buy politicians, police and judges". Yup. And just like many before them, as soon as they stop paying up is the moment the DEA and Feds will finally go after them. Not a moment sooner though. Government officials who turn a blind eye to this are just as bad as these drug lords themselves.

You would have to assume his money room was 100% fireproof right?

Stupid the amount of money that was in this place. Reminds me of the pictures that came out when Ukraine deposed their president a few months back.

But I'm calling bullshit on those estimates. 22 Billion dollars seems like just too much.

I was willing to believe the estimate the article made up until the picture where the author talks about the stacks being worth a quarter of a million dollars. The author is saying they are 100's, but they aren't, they're all 20's.

Secondly, let's assume that the picture of "22 billion dollars" is all hundreds. A US bill is 0.0043 inches thick. Those stacks look to be around 5 inches each (I'm totally guessing but work with me). 1000 bills would be 4.3 inches thick, so for ease of math we'll go with each bundle being 1000 bills to make the math easy. 1000 one hundred dollar bills would be 100 000 dollars. For only 10 billion dollars, you would need 100 000 stacks.

I roughly counted 34 across and 10 deep (area of 340 bundles). Judging by the picture of the guy standing by the stack, it's about 3ish feet high. Say 43 inches high (for like 3.59 feet tall). Meaning that roughly 3500 bundles are in that bundle. Which is still a hell of a lot of money (like 350 million).

Profits from the drug trade in Colombia and Mexico vary from around 8-10 billion on the low end to 35-40 billion on the high end, annually. It just doesn't make sense for one drug lord to be worth nearly HALF the annual profit of the entire Colombian/Mexican drug cartel earnings. In 2012, the US treasury declared Joaquin Guzman the most influential trafficker in the world. He was estimated to be worth 1 billion dollars. Amado Carrillo Fuentes and Pablo Escobar are estimated to be the richest gangsters in history, both worth around 25 billion dollars. That was their entire net worth, including assets like houses, plans etc.

The math just doesn't make sense for it to be 22 billion. Like that's a ridiculously sum. It's just not possible to have 22 billion dollars of cash sitting in your house. Even for a Mexican Drug Lord.

The guy is going for shock value, not reality.

It wasn't 22B but more like 206M. Meh, 6 of one I guess. Either way, that's still crazy.

By the time everyone kept a bit for themselves only 206M remained.

That's what I thought. I mean I overestimated the value by about 150 million lol, but that's pretty good for ten minutes speculation :P

Still a shit ton of money though.

First off, it's not the DEA and police. Mexico has serious structural problems in its government, and it's incredibly dangerous NOT to take bribes. There are plenty of good, decent people who take bribes because they don't want to see their entire families decapitated. Why don't you learn something about the global drug trade before you denigrate good people who are in HELL because of our drug problems. Imagine if the US government murdered everyone in your life if you paid your taxes late, or if you refused to say the pledge of allegiance. I bet you'd be a total scumbag, huh?
