Default Who's the next Big D Man?

If I analyzed the trade forum post I wrote, many people's best trades in the past few years were "I traded for Karlsson before he was Karlsson" type trades.

My question to the forum, who is the next big D man or next few? Maybe not on Karlsson level obviously, but a future stud, that everyone could try to acquire at a reasonable price now and reap huge rewards later?

Help everyone on Dobber Forums target that guy so we can come back here and thank you profusely in a couple years!

    IMO:
    -Morgan rielly
-Victor Hedman (kind of there but still has room to grow)
-I like the way Krug and Maata play but i cant see them being close to a karlsson.
    -Ekman-Larsson has good pontential
    - Romn Josi has been improving in leaps and bounds and with a new coach it might help
    - Jacob Trouba has lots of potential as well

these guys have good potential but it would be a long shot for them to ever reach "karlsson" level

OEL is already a star. Hedman, if he replicates this season can be considered one as well. so i won't count them in this list.

if you're talking about young guys ready to take the next step, guys like:

    reilly
    trouba
    schultz
    hamilton
    gardiner

there are obviously some others but good chance one of those guys above end up hitting 50 in their careers.

    other potential candidates:

    lindhom

    josi

it is my belief that being 5 years later it is much more difficult to pull off those types of deals of grabbing someone before they are someone as the level of knowledge is increasing

with leagues having 20 and 30 minor league players per club nowadays the likelihood of a 15th overall pick being undervalued decreases imo

that is not to say that in the right circumstances trading with the right guy you can't get someone but imo it is getting increasingly more difficult

also keep in mind even if say 10 people say they stole Karlsson they very likely represent a small portion of the Karlsson owners out there in keeper leagues so these things were tough to pull off even back then because for everyone 1 guy who got Karlsson cheap a crap load more did not

i guess the point i am trying to make is that you will drive yourself crazy if you try to predict the next breakout and then pursue them in your leagues, theoretically driving their price up just by asking to their availability

as has been pointed out it is kind of unlikely we see another Karlsson anytime soon which means you are looking at next tier guys

pick groups of 5 young defensemen with similar upside that are similar in age and target the one with the unsexiest name

realistically speaking guys like OEL and McDonagh are going to produce pretty similarly, yes OEL is likely to outpoint him but not by a fair enough margin to make up for the sexy name markup of getting a guy like OEL vs a guy like McDonagh

so what i would do is get the lists that people give you and target the name that isn't as pretty as all the others, i doesn't matter if he finishes with 3 fewer points every season if you get him for half the price of the other players

Gardiner and Schultz may be able to be stolen as buy low options with huge potential. If you're willing to pay a premium, Morgan Rielly is your best bet.

Keep an eye on Adam Clendening too. Bowman and Chicago are very high on this kid.

Long term Pulock and Morrissey project as very good scorers.

Noticed no one's mentioned Tyson Barrie yet. He might have the biggest upside of them all. The way he plays, he could definitely turn into Mike Green when he was still a fantasy stud.

good catch. there are definitely guys that will be missed, and chances are the next green/karlsson won't even be on this list.

    although i'm hoping it's reilly

Guys like Reilly and Gardiner, when do you guys see them being productive?? 50+ points would be productive for those guys. In a keep 5, it is very easy for me to make steals on guys like that. No one really keeps the young guns, usually the best players from their team as we have no minor league. I think Hamilton is coming along real nicely, he seems like he could get 40 next year. I think Schultz is one who lots of people think is over-hyped, but if he and Edmonton get it together it could be scary. I think he could get 60 in his best season. **Que the Schultz is so overrated comments cause we haven't heard them before***

Reilly I think also has one of the higher ceilings of all the young guns, but still needs a bit of time to be a productive fantasy defensemen in a start 4D, keep 5 overall.

There isn't a Karlsson on the horizon, to my knowledge.
There are some good upcoming young D-men, listed above...
But realistically - just because there has been a Karlsson doesn't mean that another one is coming any time soon.

Hamilton and Schultz would be interesting ones to sniff around right now. They are both a couple of years past the peak of their hype, and have yet to dominate. You won't pry them away cheap from smart, patient owners who know what they are doing, but the twitchy, impatient ones might be willing to move them.

I would still have an eye on Ryan Murphy and even Ryan Ellis. Risky picks, but talented and worth watching.

    This is true.

Though... NOBODY ever expected Karlsson to be Karlsson either.
Not to the level he has achieved, anyways.
