Default Stan Bowman, Chicago's Mad Genius

Is there any other GM in the league you can make a case for as being better than Stan Bowman of the Blackhawks?

I can't think of one. Maybe his dad in the old days, but nobody in the current NHL.

Although he serves as a senior advisor for hockey operations with the Blackhawks, I don't think Scotty Bowman was ever a GM. Who are some other GM's that you think are close to Bowman? One that comes to mind is Pittsburgh's Ray Shero.

Peter Chiarelli is a close second and his success speaks for itself. But Bowman obviously gets the nod for best current GM based on the two Stanley Cups alone.

I don't think there's anyone that comparable to Bowman right now. I think the next best GM is in Boston, and then maybe Shero. I'll give Shero credit for some savy drafting in recent years, the James Neal trade, and for resigning Crosby and Malkin. But does it really take that great of a GM to have players like Crosby and Malkin and let the car drive on cruise control afterwards? I do question his drafting of Staal. If Shero was better, Crosby and Malkin would have more than one championship ring right now.

Theres no doubt that Bowman is one of the leagues best. Kenny Holland is up there in my eyes along with Dean Lombardi.
10 Team, Points Only, Cash League

25 Man Roster (no position), top 20 point getters count at end of month
Keep 20/25 at seasons end, Cut 5 to FA for redrafting
    Goalie points W=2pt L=-1pt SHO=2pt

Stamkos, Tavares, Eichel, Mercer, JRobertson, RThomas, Kucherov, Nugent-Hopkins, Tuch, KConnor, Necas, Point, Konecny, SJarvis, Cozenz, Morrissey, Bouchard, Josi, Novak, Tolvanen, Peterka, Brink

    G- Vasilevskiy, Sorokin, Oettinger

My thoughts exactly! No question that Shero is a solid GM and probably in line for third (Holland has to be considered as well). But Pittsburgh's depth is severely lacking and that is the reason they haven't won more titles. If he could fill out his bottom-6 with even decent players, Pittsburgh would easily have another cup or two

I think it's easy to criticize Shero for the Iginla and Morrow trades, but only if you're looking at in the long-term perspective. Shero's deadline moves last year were "win now" trades. Shero's drafting has been anything but bad, although Olli Maatta did fall in his lap.

This article from The Pens Blog begs to differ, at least on his forward drafting ability. No one will argue his d-men draft history.

I don't understand the criticism in drafting Staal. He's more than serviceable, and with limited cap room they already have, there's no way they would've been able to retain everyone had a different scenario played out, a la Jonathan Toews.

Stan Bowman has been a good GM, but not the best.
Holland (DET) is far & away the best GM in the NHL.

The 2010 Stanley Cup team is Tallon's baby... make no mistake.
Those are all Tallon's pieces. (even Hossa, who signed on July 1, 2009 - was still a Tallon signing).
I'd even say that the 2013 Cup team is more "Tallon" than it is "Bowman".

Bowman has done a good job keeping his cornerstones in place - but I don't think the decisions were that difficult.
The Toews/P.Kane/Keith/Hossa/Sharp five-some are the key locks for that team.

Saad & Shaw are nice draft picks.
    Perhaps Teravainen pans out.
Nothing else in 2010/2011/2012 that impresses me.

Also, the author states that the Hawks let Niemi go.
Not so. They could not re-sign Niemi because they matched the offer sheet for Hjalmarsson.
(I think people remember this one).
Bowman's line was "Offer-sheet talk is of no concern to me."

Corey Crawford panned out for one long NHL playoff, but let's not forget how many people doubted him and how many still do a bit.

As for other top GMs: LouLam, Chiarelli, Shero, Poile.
I don't honestly believe that the top minds in hockey are that impressed with Stan Bowman - yeah, he's got the championships - but I credit Tallon for that.

Another article with some voting from some NHL personalities & writers (back in April 2013):
    http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=665441
(Stan Bowman ain't found too highly on this list.)

Well, I suppose things could have been a lot worse than Staal I suppose. Wouldn't want Malkin playing with Backstrom or Giroux. Course hindsight is also 20/20 and drafting is never an exact science. Where I think there was a short fall was handling and rounding out the roster in the last 3 yrs. He's not bad but he didn't do anything spectacular to put the team over the top to win. I suppose I just expect more from him but didn't get it.

He's a genius for accepting a job managing the best team in the league that Dale Tallon built?

Sorry. I can think of 10 better GM's in this league.

Tallon built the Blackhawks, then he fell on the sword to cover for his staff member's screw-up. Then Bowman swoops in just in time for the Cup. That's like Bylsma being an elite coach for suddenly turning the Penguins into Cup winners. Bowman has done a good job of keeping the team elite. So points for maintainence. But nowhere close to first.

Bowman's finger prints are all over Tallon's body of work though. Bowman has been with the Hawks since 2000, serving as an assistant dealing with salary cap juggling and player evaluation.

And I'm sorry, but Poile is not even in the conversation in my opinion. Have you seen his free agency class this year? What about trading for Dubnyk, while Thomas, Fasth, and Markstrom were all dealt? Even what he got for Legwand is laughable.
