Default Fun with numbers - 25 stats

I recently went through some of the more interesting (and admittedly random) stats from this year. Jotting them down into a list of 25 below. Are there any other weird or eye popping numbers you've come across this year? I like to go through them and look for outliers or underlying themes, can be a great tool in preparing for next years draft.

    1. 9 hits through 52 games for Rick Nash. Have to wonder if this season’s concussion is impacting his style of play.
    2. Derek Stepan is only plus 4, after being plus 25 last season. Beware of plus minus, always fudging our rankings.
    3. Kyle Okposo is 5th in the NHL for scoring (69 points). Put your hand up if you saw that coming? No, put your hand down, there is no way you possibly saw this coming.
    4. Joe Thornton is 2nd in the league for assists (55). You know, that soon to be 35 year old guy that you left fall in your draft because he’s “getting up there.”
    5. Craig Anderson has a GAA above 3.00. A guy that was considered among the top 10-12 this fall. I never like a situation with two goalies (Lehner) and this is reminding me why.
    6. Jimmy Howard only has 2 shutouts. He was (wrongly) a trendy pick by me this past summer.
    7. Gustav Nyquist is receiving 3:22 per game on the power play. Hard not to produce with that kind of opportunity.
    8. 163 for Justin Abdelkader, becoming a bit of a specialist in that category.
    9. Dustin Brown might not break 30 points. He has to be injured, right? Someone, please confirm, I can’t fathom the alternative explanations.
    10. Jeff Carter has 218 shots. Sure, he isn’t the same producer he was in Philly, but he fills two of the toughest categories consistently (goals and shots)
    11. 100 penalty minutes for Brian McGrattan. He’s doing everything in his power to stay on your fantasy roster for at least one more year.
    12. Patrice Bergeron is plus 32, tops in the NHL. Even with only “ok” stats otherwise it’s hard to argue with the dominance you get in two categories (plus minus and face-offs)
    13. Ryan Getzlaf is already at 29 goals. This from a player that had never broken 25. Rare that someone reinvents themselves a bit at this point, but he’s shooting more than he has in years.
    14. Alex Ovechkin is sitting 78 shots ahead of his nearest competitor (Phil Kessel). The Oscar for statistical dominance in one category goes to…
    15. Tyler Seguin has 69 points in 65 games. Forcing me to open up the debate on who you would prefer in fantasy – Seguin or Hall?
    16. Buffalo is scoring 1.85 goals per game. Under two from an NHL Franchise. If you draft one player from the Sabres next year it will officially be one too many. (Don’t worry Cody, I’m only using hyperbole, you’re still alright)
    17. The Penguins are scoring on 24.3% of their power plays, best mark in the NHL. Employing the always effective strategy of “we have Malkin and Crosby and you don’t.”
    18. Anze Kopitar has a Corsi percentage of 61.0. If only fantasy hockey made use of advanced stats (note: we might only be 5 or so years away from this, be ready)
    19. Nathan MacKinnon has a PDO (generally used as a proxy for “luck”) of 103.9. He’s an absolute star to be sure, but there is at least a tiny bit of room for regression to the mean.
    20. Nichushkin is only getting 1:13 of power play time per game, which is due for a hefty raise next season. (You didn’t think I’d have a post without sneaking in some Nichushkin propaganda did you?)
    21. Eric Staal might not break 240 shots, this from a guy we used to count on for 300 or more.
    22. Speaking of Staals, I’ve officially given up on Jordan. 36 points in 68 games this year.
    23. Shea Weber is leading Nashville in scoring (43 points). It’s not exactly Bobby Orr winning an Art Ross, but it’s impressive nonetheless. Imagine his numbers on an offensive team?
    24. Sidney Crosby is 2nd in the NHL for face-off wins at 845 (because his fantasy value wasn’t high enough already)
    25. And lastly, to all those that either held onto him for years or were crafty enough to keep your waiver priority all season, Kuznetsov has 4 assists in his first 4 games. Many more good things to come my friends.

I once traded Henrik Lundqvist and Ilya Kovalchuk in return for Peter Budaj and Henrik Zetterberg… have lived in shame ever since.

    Interesting stats.

I am not quite ready to give up on Jordan Staal yet, but if you are in a salary cap league, he makes it hard to hang on and I can understand your frustration.

I actually see the Sabres GFA as a bit of an opportunity -- there's no chance they are THIS bad again. Looking back at other teams that have fallen below 2 in the last few years, and they all jumped considerably the following year. Gotta think there's value in some of their guys next year (Hodgson, Ehrhoff, Ennis, etc.)

And as for "the Oscar for statistical dominance" -- Crosby might make that one the scoring race! Wow. Unbelievable.

I was really looking for this year to be the "one" - at least 60 Points and OK peripherals. He's getting to an age where we can't reasonably expect more development.

Thanks man - apologies on #8, that is supposed to read "hits" - I just forgot to write it in as a category.

Interesting point with BUF - they will most certainly be better next year. I worry about Hodgson though, unless they can upgrade their winger spots over the summer.

Point #18 - don't be so sure about that. Baseball has had fancy stats much longer and they are much more prevalent/accepted in that sport yet fantasy leagues still use the basic stats.

Good point. They are what, 5 or 6 years ahead of hockey? maybe more, and we still have all the old school numbers in place.

Definitely more than that. The "Behind the Net Era" didn't begin until 2007-08, meanwhile Bill James started pumping out Baseball Abstracts back in 1977.

    grammar Nazi
    Noun
(slang, idiomatic) 1. A person who habitually corrects or criticizes the language usage of others, especially in situations where it is unnecessary, e.g. an informal conversation.
Notes: This behavior is almost always found in people with very low I.Q's, whom have a very low sense of self worth. Impotence is also commonly linked to Grammar Nazi's.
