haha I missed the first pick and rushed the next couple trying to get in, but hopefully a bit of WW or trade action will shore things up from a bit of a shaky draft ><

Breezed through the rosters kofax looks pretty solid especially if bernier wins the starting job and sid is healthy. I messed up an couple picks but that usually happens
Don't say that! Ha ha, now I'm expected to perform!! Too much pressure!

I've never participated in such a deep draft. It was difficult. My goal going in was to focus on offense early and take goaltenders later than most. I worry about my goaltending, how Ward bounces back from the injury, Khudobin pushing him, and Bernier is a definite risk. I'm hoping I can stay middle of the pack or so with them. Defense I kind of left until the end and used to fill out hits and +/-. We'll see how it works out.

    Some of my thoughts:
I think Kyle's Team for one looks really strong, well rounded.
Feinting Goc gave me fits stealing my picks throughout the draft.
Steve Downie and MacKinnon were solid picks at their positions by Laendarian. (I had MacKinnon lined up next, but he never made it. Downie I completely whiffed on).
A couple of teams are in it realy tough for goaltending.

Pretty slim pickings on the waiver wire. Pretty soon we'll be asking to trade with the Commish's team rather than take the duds on the wire

This was fun and frustrating (to have my first 3 choices for almost each round picked under right under my nose). All the best to everyone!

Edit: Easily the toughest draft I have ever experienced.

Took me until now to finally stumble across this thread. Many thanks are due to Pengwin for setting this all up. Very cool of him. This is what makes this the best forum out there for hockey.

Thought it was a great draft myself. Raining on Holypucks first seven picks was just icing. Was competitive right through the late round picks.

Looking forward to crushing all of you this season . Good luck to everyone!

    Team: Leaf Nation (Kyle's Team)

C- P Kane, Carter, Grabovski, Bozak
    LW- Nash, Kunitz, Landeskog, Doan
    RW- Tarasenko, Setoguchi, Cole, Hemsky
D- Boyle, Seabrook, Bouwmeester, Zidlicky, Gunnarson, Boychuck
    G- Miller, Elliot
BN- Thomas, Ranger, N Foligno, MacArthur, Legwand

    1 (9) Patrick Kane C,RW
I was thinking either Giroux or Kane in this position, wanting to try and take goalies later than usual. Giroux was taken so Kane was my option. Should help keep my plus minus under control with a decent amount of shots.

    2 -24 Rick Nash LW,RW
I feel Nash will definitely help keep me competitive in the offence categories under the new coaching system. I am hoping he becomes the point per game player some believe him to be. We should see an increase in power play points and he is always great for SOG. Good +/- and is not afraid to throw the body if need be.

    3 -41 Ryan Miller G
Definitely time for a goalie. Bad team, but is going to see a lot of shots and is vying for a spot on the American Olympic squad. Not unreasonable to see a bounce back from him, but also a potential candidate to be traded.

    4 -56 Chris Kunitz LW
I could not pass on Kunitz in the fourth round as he could be a steal if he puts up similar numbers to last year. He also fit my mold of having well rounded players. Will have great +/-, likes to hit, decent amount of SOG, and he plays with Crosby and the Penguins power play.

    5 -73 Gabriel Landeskog LW
Initially, I was going to draft Nabokov here, but Holypuck swooped in right before me on that pick. Again, I wanted a well rounded team and Landeskogs peripherals fit this strategy very well. We know he can shoot and hit, it is ultimately whether we see further digression or the glimpse of point getting we saw in his rookie year that will show the value of this pick. There is a lot of talent in Colorado and I am hoping they start to show it this year.

    6 -88 Jeff Carter C,LW,RW
Carter is a pure goal scorer and likes to shoot and has a lot of position eligibility. I figured he would supplement my scoring categories nicely.

    7 -105 Brian Elliott G
It is at this point that Pengwin reminded us that it is a weekly start league, oops. Gambled on Elliot hoping to get Halak as well. Halak was taken 4 picks later. I am one of many fantasy players that will be watching St. Louis closely this year to put it lightly, lol.

    8 -120 Dan Boyle D
Sudden realization you also need the D, thats what she said.. Had OEL lined up, but he got taken moments earlier. Next on the list was Boyle. Fairly consistent, good on the power play, and a decent amount of shots.

    9 -137 Tim Thomas G
Already in deep with goaltending so I took the chance on Thomas. Another bad team so I am obviously concerned with the Wins category, but he should also see a lot of shots. There is also a chance that he shows us he has another year left in him. I am happy he at least has a contract at this point too.

    10 -152 Vladimir Tarasenko RW
A bit of a leap here, but I had to start thinking about positions. I think we will see an increase in his numbers this year. By how much is the big question though.

    11 -169 Brent Seabrook D
Seabrook is reliable and well rounded. He will help my +/- and hits categories. But also plays with some talented people so points are never far from reach.

    12 -184 Shane Doan LW,RW
Dual position eligibility, likes to shoot and hit, and we should see a decent amount of points. He is playing with Ribeiro now who is a great playmaker and many believe that Boedker has an opportunity to break out. This late in the draft a well rounded pick.

    13 -201 Mikhail Grabovski C
Grabovski should definitely see an increase in stats this year. He will get to play a style of hockey he is more accustomed to and better fantasy wise. Should see a rise in stats across the board and I am happy with him as my third center.

    14 -216 Tyler Bozak C
Another center, he will get first line minutes, whether he deserves them or not, and power play time. For this late in the draft I am happy with the opportunities his team will give him.

    15 -233 Devin Setoguchi RW
Seto has another great opportunity to play with this Jets team. He likes to shoot and hit so this fits in great with my draft strategy. Might hurt my plus minus this year, but this is outweighed if he can chip in on multiple categories.

    16 -248 Jay Bouwmeester D
    17 -265 Marek Zidlicky D
I like Bouwmeester better in St Louis and he should be a decent option for me. If Zidlicky can get his plus minus under control, he will also be just what is needed.

    18 -280 Erik Cole RW
Cole has the opportunity to play with Sequin and Benn. He also takes a lot of shots and Hits. If he can find some chemistry with these two players then it could be a great pick. I will be paying close attention to how this situation unfolds.

    19 -297 Ales Hemsky RW
Hemsky is a risky pick I seem to be attracted to in the later rounds every year. He will get plenty of opportunity in the early months to show is worth while the Nudge is out.

    20 -312 Carl Gunnarsson D
    21 -329 Johnny Boychuk D
    22 -344 Nick Foligno LW
    23 -361 Paul Ranger D
    24 -376 Clarke MacArthur LW
    25 -393 David Legwand C
Again, I just tried to take well rounded players the rest of the way. I took another gamble on Ranger, as I have liked what I have seen in him. At the time Franson's situation was also up in the air. I like the opportunity that Clarke MacArthur may have in Ottawa as well.

I feel I drafted a well balanced team and should compete in many of the scoring categories. There are some questions I have in net, but hopefully they will be good enough to help out positively. This was by far the most competitive draft I have taken part in, as many have already mentioned as well, but that is what we are all looking for any way! Good luck to everyone and thank you Pengwin for all of your efforts, much appreciated!

Just to confirm, the lineups are weekly. Correct?

With Yahoo's new layout, I don't know really how to change the lineups around...

15 Team Weekly Roto League: G, A, +/-, PPP, SOG, HIT, W, GAA, SV

    C: Duchene(LW), Richards, Plekanec, Staal(LW)
    LW: Lupul(RW), Dubinsky(C), Silfverberg(RW), Glencross
    RW: Wheeler, Gallagher, Stempniak(LW), Boyes(C)
D: Weber, Ekman-Larsson, Wideman, Hamilton, Bieksa, Ballard
    G: Quick, Howard
    BN: Higgins(LW), Clifford(LW), Cogliano(C/LW), Kreider(LW), Vatanen(D)

    Here's a break-down of my picks:

I picked 14/15, so pickings were a little slim when the clock got to me but I'm still fairly pleased with the team I managed to put together. There were actually 16 teams, but the 16th was the dummy commish team so it doesn't really count.

    14. Jonathan Quick

In a weekly league, I really wanted to have solid goaltending and with Bernier gone and the Kings being a big defence first time I figure Quick should be a solid choice. Lundqvist, Rask, and Niemi were already selected.

    19. Jimmy Howard

Here I really shored up my goaltending with this move. I like Jimmy for a lot of wins and saves. Hopefully his GAA is half decent too. My goaltending should compete with anyone else in the league.

    16. Shea Weber

My plan was to get goaltending done first, followed by a solid multi-cat d-man. Karlsson and Subban were gone but I'm happy with Weber here.

    51. Matt Duchene

I almost took another multi-cat d-man but there were a lot still available so I figured I better get going on the forwards before all the goods ones are gone. Duchene is a lock for Colorado's top line, hopefully he can build on his success last year...and he also put up about a hit per game so I'm happy with that multi-cat-ness.

    78. Blake Wheeler

Really happy with this pick, Wheeler will put up points and hits for my squad.

    83. Joffrey Lupul

If he can stay healthy, this pick is looking really good for my team. I think Lupul can put up 70pts if healthy no problem. But here, health is the million dollar question.

    110. Brad Richards

Another potential home run, Alain Vigneault should play him in offensive situations, and I'm hoping that Richards can bounce back and give me a 65-75 point season. Its definitely possible. I hope it happens.

    115. Oliver Ekman-Larsson

Time for another multi-cat D-man. OEL does it all, points, shots, and hits. He should be a lock to continue to produce has he has in the recent past as nothing has really changed for him in Phoenix since last season as far as opportunity goes.

    142. Tomas Plekanec

Not a big fan of this pick, with Eller and Desharnais sniffing around his ice-time. This was more of a case of he being a solid 60pt player, while other players on the board weren't quite so consistent. I wasn't feeling like rolling the dice on a 45 pt player who could bust out to 70, so I chose Plekanec.

    147. Jordan Staal

I like this pick. Solid player who's situation on the team is already locked in. He will get the ice-time and he should produce accordingly. I'm a fan of consistency rather than risk, and I tried to put off going for the young breakout players until guys like Staal were already done.

    174. Brandon Dubinsky

This is one of my favorite picks. Dubinsky was lights out (when he wasn't injured) last season. Hits included, he is looking really good and I was surprised I got him so late. Yahoo had him ranked fairly low so I had to scroll down the list a bit to find him, maybe thats why he was still available.

    179. Brenden Gallagher

Here we go with the younger riskier, but potential big payoff picks. Gallagher had a solid season last year, and if he can play on Montreal's top line (so far so good) and improve a little from last year, I'll be happy.

    206. Dennis Wideman

My internet cut out and Yahoo autopicked Wideman. Not the pick I would've made, but, not the end of the world.

    211. Jakob Silfverberg

Hoping the guy can live up to the hype around him, and maybe even get a sniff of the top line. If he stays among the top 6, and maybe sprinkle some powerplay time on top, i'll be happy with this pick.

    238. Dougie Hamilton

Had a good year last season, and should improve on it. Little worried about opportunity since in the playoffs he went invisible, but I hope Julien gives him the opportunity.

    243. Lee Stempniak

Calgary top line, maybe is good for 55-60 points. Not bad at this point in the draft. I think Stempniak is underrated right now. Certainly he will drag my plus minus down though...

    270. Curtis Glencross

See Lee Stemniak above, with slightly lower point projections.

    275. Kevin Bieksa

Injury risk here for sure, but a solid multi-cat defenceman who I think will see increased responsibilty from Tortorella. He is Tortorella's type of player.

    302. Vinny Prospal

Thought he might land a contract, he didn't. He has since been swapped for Sami Vatanen.

    307. Maxim Lapierre

I picked up Lapierre for a mix of points and hits, but on further review, since his points were really not much to speak of, I figured it would be smarter to go all in on someone with even more hits. So I swapped him for Kyle Clifford.

    334. Chris Higgins

I like this pick where I got it. He could get 50 points.

    339. Chris Kreider
    366. Keith Ballard
    371. Brad Boyes
    398. Andrew Cogliano

Pengwin, just realized a problem with this league.

The Dummy Commish team's Plus Minus will likely be in the middle of the pack at an even rating.

Is there anyway we could manually reduce it to the bottom of the pack?

    1. Nope, everybody is going to have to live with that. I'm not going to make an effort to manage the dummy team. Consider it as an extra -1pt penalty for rostering a MINUS team.
The standings "are what they are" and there will be no manual adjustment at any time. Whatever Yahoo! lists as the standings is final.
[I am glad you brought it up now though... because I would've hated to explain that later in the season.]

    2. Reminder to everybody on two key dates:
    a) Thursday midnight-ish. Set your weekly rosters for FRI-THURS games in one of two ways. i) You can go to My Team and click Edit Weekly Lineup from dropdown menu. ii) You can use the schedule dates under My Team to go to a future Friday and set your line-up. NOTE: Even though you are setting your FRIDAY line-up, it has to be DONE by end of THURSDAY.

    b) Tuesday midnight-ish. Waivers are processed between end-of-Tuesday and start-of-Wednesday. New players will show up on your team's Thursday roster and therefore are available for FRIDAY-THURS roster spots.

    Best of luck to all!!!
