If you had asked me this morning, I would have said he was safe. Quite honestly though, after Kovalchuk just dipped to the KHL like that today I have no expectation for any Russian player to not bolt...because I thought he would be as safe as it gets, especially with that 15 year deal.

If he can do it...anyone can do it.

My naive bubble got burst today.

Let's put it this way, if you can capitalize on this news today and get Semin at a discount because of an antsy owner, go for it. But if you're going to pay fair value or even overpay, don't.

kovalchuk signed his contract a few years ago so he didn't change his mind over night

there are no guarantees however i would imagine that those who signed recently like semin are safe for the time being

    but again no guarantees

I wouldn't touch him with a 10 ft pole...but I mostly felt that way before the Kovie thing anyway so meh...I will say that this Kovie news has rocked the fantasy world and you might find GMs holding Ruskies (especially the lazy prima donna types like Semin) are looking to sell where once they would have held. A good time to buy if you don't mind the risk and can get a good price

ALEXANDER Semin is probably safe for now I'd say. Bad time to sell though. Hard time to buy too bc the seller will be reading these threads and will want value. I'd say acquire if the manager is putting him out there but if he's not, wait a bit to kick tires... Give it like 2-3 weeks. Did Semin play in the KHL during the most recent lockout?...

I think Semin is safe. I am worried about Tarasenko on the other hand because he played with Kovy last year for SKA

This is how I feel as well. I wasnt a fan before the whole Kovalchuk fiasco yesterday and could care less if he leaves today. Too inconsistent for the money he was making.

I think semin is on a short enough deal that it should not affect him. I seems he likes it in Carolina too. But if you trade for him his value should be lower now with this Kovy bolt, so that would be in your favour!

I myself do not believe in this Russian factor, I think Kovy just wanted to be the face for the KHL (as he was not here), make $20+ mill a season, hang out with Putin, and get flown around on all of the private jets he can handle (as the other transportation in the KHL is usually pretty brutal).

    I think he is safe.

    1) He had two perfectly clean opportunities to leave for the KHL. As a UFA in 2012, and this offseason (if he didn't take the extension).
    2) After his time in WSH he came out and said he wanted to stay in the NHL, and took a ONE YEAR prove it contract and did just that. There was plenty of criticism about his play in the media at the time, but he didn't leave, he stuck it out to find a contract here.
    3) He signed his 5 year extension after playing in the KHL during the lockout.

At this point aything can happen. Kovi leaving could spur others on the fence to do the same. Ovi next?
