Flames lose another Free Agent to the KHL this time Anton Babchuk. Babchuk signed with Salavat Yulaev of the KHL today. Anton Babchuk was the Flames last asset left from the Phaneuf deal except for Matt Stajan and he's not an asset.

Craig Conroy was getting interviewed yesterday and he said that in the Flames minds that Kipper is done. If Kipper comes back to the Flames in two months and says I want to play again then the Flames will welcome him back but they are moving forward without Kipper. They will go with MacDonald, Ramo and Bera to battle for the number one spot next year. Hopefully one of them step up and run away with it starting spot.

Another interesting thing Conroy said was that they would be willing to trade two 1st rd picks plus a roster player if it meant moving up and getting the player they want. Looks like the Flames are kicking tires in hopes of improving on the 6th overall pick.

It's unfortunate they managed to win one of those last few games when everyone else was tanking. I'm still not sure how Carolina automatically got the #5 pick with the exact same record as Calgary.

Though to be fair, they have never had a top 5 pick in their history.

Let's just hope whoever they pick doesn't turn out like other #6 picks in Daniel Tkaczuk (1997 - 11 NHL points) or Rico Fata (1998 - 1 point with Calgary)

You realize Tkaczuk is an assistant coach of Owen Sound, and Fata is still toiling in the Swiss league. I know you can't go back in time, but they drafted the worst player in both drafts in the top ten.

Who would you stay away from if you're Calgary drafting at #6? My thought is Nurse. Calgary needs an elite forward.

It has to do with the number of regular and overtime wins that the two teams had (the ROW column on the NHL.com page). Even though they both had the same number of wins, Calgary had more non-shootout wins than Carolina did, thus they end up higher in the standings.

Button is already on the record as saying he sees 5 franchise forwards in this draft and rumor has it they have considerable interest in Lindholm. Presumably MacKinnon, Drouin and Barkov are 3 of the 5 franchise forwards they see, Nichushkin is a safe bet to be the 4th, so it comes down to Monahan or Lindholm for the 5th franchise forward. Judging by the rumor of their interest in Lindholm, it could be him.

I agree, I hope they don't take Nurse.

Assuming Jones, Barkov, MacKinnon and Drouin are all gone in the top 5, I'll be very happy if they grab one of Nichushkin or Lindholm and happy if they decide to go with Ristolainen or Monahan.

I just hope the Flames do not take a Dman with their #6 pick. They need a forward with this pick. A centre would be even better. Conroy said that the Flames are hoping to grab a kid that might be able to play in the NHL next year. I am hoping that the can throw in one of the later 1st round picks with the #6 and move up to 3rd or 4th overall. Then take the next best forward/dman with their last draft pick in the 1st rd.

If Miikka Kiprusoff retires then there's a chance Ramo could end up as Calgary's number one goaltender next year.

Everyone believes in Baertschi but what can you tell me about Calgary's forward pipeline - specifically guys like

    Mikael Backlund
    Max Reinhart
    Mark Jankowski

do these guys have a shot at being anything special?

    Thanks!

Mikael Backlund - I dont think he will ever live up to the potential the Flames had hoped for him. Last year was his magical 4th year and what did he do? He got hurt again and produced just 16 points in 32 games. I dont see him being more than a third line guy that can play on the 2nd line for short periods of time.

Max Reinhart - I see Reinhart being more of a two way player than being a scorer. He struggled in his first year as a pro putting up points and seemed a step behind in his short stint with the Flames. I think he is another player who will be a third line guy.

Mark Jankowski - Saying he is a project is an understatement. I dont really have a read on this guy as he sooooo far away from making the NHL. Craig Conroy recently said that Jankowski was 4-5 year project. Dont expect him in the NHL for quite some time.

With the 6th pick of the 2013 NHL draft, the Calgary Flames select Sean Monahan of the Ottawa 67’s.

you'll love Poirier. One of the draft's biggest risers.

Love the Flames last couple of drafts. Great scouting IMO

Wanted to post this somewhere as it was an interesting comment. Feaster said that he was very happy to get 3 players in his top 13. A somewhat surprising comment. Some teams lists can vary dramatically from consensus.
