    Default Studs & Duds - Wednesday 4/24/13

    Studs

    1. Like Fine Wine
Age is nothing but a number to Martin St.Louis who continues to defy his detractors who assume that his play will diminish as he gets older. Marty scored a hat-trick against the Leafs, while adding five shots on goal and a plus-four rating. St.Louis has now overtaken Sid the kid for tops in the NHL for points with 58 in 46 games.

    2. Shark-Killer
Mike Smith continued his domination against the San Jose Sharks last night. Interesting stats to note: Smith is now 6-1-1 against the Sharks since signing with the Coyotes. Of those eight games, he has shut them out four times. On Wednesday, Smith stopped 33 of the 34 shots thrown at him for the win.

    3. The Handyman
Remember when Michal Handzus was putting up close to 60 points like 10 years ago? On Wednesday he got the good fortune of lining up with Patrick Kane, and both of them recorded three points each. Handzus tallied three assists while Kane scored a goal and added a couple helpers, putting him fourth among points leaders.

    1. Relax guys, we're in the playoffs!
Toronto got shut down by the Lightning in the game following their playoff-clinching win on Saturday. The team allowed five goals, four of them against James Reimer, and Dion Phaneuf was a team worst minus-three on the night. A rough blow for Reimer owners hoping that he would continue to post the stellar numbers he has recorded all year.

    2. Check your Oil
Type that into Urban Dictionary. Made me go wtf. Anyway, the Oilers continue their downward spiral as they look to once again have a top five pick at the entry draft. With the absence of RNH, the Oilers elected to roll a line of Taylor Hall, Jordan Eberle, and Sam Gagner. They responded by going minus-three each. Dubnyk allowed three goals on 29 shots, yet somehow earned third star of the game. Someone is gonna have to elaborate on that.

    3. Growing Pains
The Lightning have been getting a lot of good mileage from rookies Alex Killorn and Richard Panik, however both managed to be on the ice for both goals scored by Toronto. They were the only ones on the team to go minus-two in a 5-2 victory.

    Quick Hits

    - Welcome back Patrick Sharp. One goal, plus-two, three shots.

    - Steven Stamkos fell a point short of St.Louis with a goal and an assist, but one-upped Marty in the plus-minus category, going an incredible plus-five, on the ice for all of his team's goals.

    - Patrick Marleau still isn't scoring. Six points in 13 games now in April. Extend the sample size and it only gets worse.

    - Jimmy Howard didn't instill a lot of confidence either stopping only 14 of 17 in his first game post-signing. However since then he's been a wall, going 2-0-1 and stopping 70 of a possible 72 shots, capped off by tonight's 23 save performance. Small sample size, but a good sign of possible things to come.

    - Thomas Greiss finally got a look, and deserved a much better fate stopping 30 of 32.

    - Brent Burns broke his three game slump. The fact that we find it odd that Burns hadn't scored a point in three games shows just how good he's been lately.

    - Ben Bishop stopped 26 of 28 for the win.

    Great post!

It's amazing how well St.Louis is playing. I hope he wins the Art Ross this year.
