You just can't beat The Wire... Nothing ever will, as far as i am concerned.
Though, Simon's other big project, Treme, has a lot of the same great elements that made The Wire soooo good. It is a little slower, but still a reflection of modern society through compelling story-telling of it's people. Great music too. It also bases its storyline on the actual events as the story of hurricane Katrina unfolded.

Can't believe they killed off Stringer Bell! He was one of the best, if not THE best character on the show. Maybe he'll land a new role in Walking Dead - they seem to be poaching Wire alumni left and right

Just started watching this last week - SPOILERS:
It started out a bit slow for me but the last 2 episodes I watched really ramped it up, the hostage standoff in the office, episdode 6 or 7 I think - pretty intense.
Really like Olyphant's character, and Walton Coggins as well...both top notch actors.

Interesting. I couldn't get past the 3rd episode. It was just so slow and I found that I didn't care about either main character. Perhaps I should give it another chance.

True Detective was good. Definitely a visual masterpiece and worthy of anyone's time. The story itself was nothing special, especially when you consider there were only two characters worth a damn on the show, which is fine.
Not sure about the whole "best since The Wire" nonsense. I'm not going to make a list but Breaking Bad is definitely on it.
