    Default Studs & Duds - Wednesday 4/17

    Studs

    Brennnnnden Morrrooooowww
Look who is running the show in Pittsburgh right now! Morrow scored two goals in the Pens victory last night giving him eight points in his last four games. He also dropped PK Subban in a third period tussle – although it wasn’t much of a fight – we’ll give the nod to Morrow on that one. He’s flying high right now and no better time to shine than with two of the league's biggest superstars out of the Pens lineup.

    Bobo and the Blue Jackets
The show continues in Columbus. Sergei Bobrovsky’s hot streak continued with a 3-2 OT win over the Ducks last night. That gives Bobo his fifth straight victory along with a .948 save percentage and a shutout in that stretch. The Jackets, now officially 8th in the west, started the season 5-12-2 which was good enough for dead last in the NHL. Since Feb 25, they are 16-4-5 and making a strong push for the playoffs.

    Ryan Miller
Check the highlights for this one, as Mr. Miller was outstanding. The TD Garden was an emotional building as the Bruins played their first game since the Marathon. Boston had a number of glorious opportunities to open up a lead on the Sabres but Miller kept shutting the door time after time. Interestingly enough, Buffalo had to pull their best player in the last minute for the extra attacker. Vanek scored the equalizer with 27 seconds to go. Miller then continued his stellar play in overtime and stopped all three shootout attempts to keep the Sabres slim playoff hopes alive.

    The Montreal Canadiens Back end
In the grand scheme of things, it’s not SO bad in Montreal but something does need to change. The Habs have now lost three in a row, giving up a sky high 18 goals over those games. Although mounting somewhat of a comeback last night against the Pens, they lost 6-4 and the goaltending didn’t get off to a great start. Budaj started and let it three goals off nine shots. Price started the second period and let it three goals off 20 shots the rest of the way. The save percentages for both goalies has been low of late but the defense hasn’t been spectacular either. The Canadiens will have to find a solution quickly before time runs out on the battle for Northeast division title.

    Jimmy Howard
Howard struggled last night giving up three goals on 17 shots. The second goal trickled around and eventually bounced off his skate but the third goal, also the Flames game-winner, was misplayed by Jimmy behind the net giving Steve Begin an empty net to backhand home his second of the night. Coming fresh off a new 6-year contract, Howard was a little stale in this outing.

    Odds & Ends

    • Brad Marchand and Patrice Bergeron both returned from concussions last night. In the Bruins-Sabres game both teams wore “Boston Strong” decals on their helmets.
    • Mikka Kiprusoff had a fantastic outing, minus Franzen’s goal from center ice. He stopped 36 of 38 shots including an impressive glove save late in the game. The Flames say Mikka will start the last two Calgary home games.
    • Jarome Iginla had a goal and an assist last night, notching his 1100th point in the process.

    Great job and thanks again.

Miller's performance was so unexpected to me because I checked in and saw he was 2/3 and figured i was in for a shellacking...then he stopped 39 of the next 40 shots lol.
