    Default Studs & Duds - Friday 4/12/13

    Studs

    Chiasson the dream

Dallas Stars rookie Alex Chiasson has not only been chasing the dream, he's been living it. Friday night's contest in Nashville saw him pick up two more goals bringing his totals up to five goals and an assist in his first five games in the NHL. Talk about making a good first impression! The rising young star has been all the Stars organization could have hoped for and then some. And he gets his goals the old fashioned way, hard work and crashing the net. For those owners in keeper and dynasty leagues your investment is starting to pay dividends and there is plenty to look forward to as his game is still in it's infancy.

    Andy comes in handy

Craig Anderson was the Sens savior on a night when his teammates could muster only 11 shots on Marty Broduer. Anderson came through with a 33 save shutout to help seal the 2-0 victory for Ottawa. It took Anderson three games to pick up his first win since returning from an ankle injury and picking up his third shutout of the season. He gave his fantasy owners a much needed boost after posting two straight losses with lacklustre ratios.

Safe to say they won't miss you in Detroit

Jonathan Toews once again played the role of Captain Clutch scoring the tying goal with just under three minutes left in the game. The Wings were clinging to a 2-1 lead as the clock wound down, hoping to salvage at least one win in the final division series between the two original six rivals. But Toews had other plans for the night and drove yet another dagger into the hearts of Wings fans. The goal marked the fifth point in four games for the Hawk's captain against Detroit this season. He finished the night plus-1, adding four shots, two blocks, and went 12-7 on the dot. The win sealed the division title for Chicago, and left the Red Wings with a bitter taste in their mouths as the Hawks swept the season series....all thanks to Toews.

    Familiarity breeds a loss

In a rather surprising move Blues coach Ken Hitchcock gave Friday's start to rookie Jake Allen instead of the currently red-hot Brian Elliott. Hitch must have figured Elliott needed a break and since Jake's last game was a 3-1 win over those same Blue Jackets, why not? This morning he may be asking himself why? Jake got lit up for four goals on 19 shots, and the Blues fell 4-1 to Columbus. The rookie netminder is 1-3 over his last four starts while allowing three or more goals in all three losses. The future is bright for the 22 year-old goalie, but not without it's ups-and-downs as this recent stretch points out.

    He's got a front-row view

Dallas' top line has been on fire lately, unfortunately for fantasy owners Jamie Benn has merely been a spectator. His linemates, Ray Whitney and rookie Alex Chiasson have done all the damage and showed tremendous chemistry together. Over the last six games he's only managed two assists, both of which came in the 5-4 win over the Sharks. Last night was one of the worst in that time as the face of the Stars didn't even manage a shot on goal. And he wasn't particularly effective on the faceoffs either, finishing last night 6-9. But worst of all for fantasy owners might be the fact that he only has two goals since February 25th. Not what you were expecting from a player of his caliber. He'll be fine in the long run, but he's certainly caused more than a few frustrated owners some bald patches from yanking their hair out lately when they needed him most.

There is an "I" in team

That's an "I" as in Ilya Kovalchuk. Since the Devils lost their offensive sparkplug in a 2-1 win over the Panthers, they have gone 0-9. The ghost of what used to be one of the greatest goalies of all-time allowed two goals on just 11 shots in the latest defeat which pretty much puts the Devils season on ice.

Deep thoughts from a shallow mind

    - Vern Fiddler's points streak is now at five after picking up two assists in the Stars win over Nashville.

    - Ray Whitney has six points in his last three games, all two point efforts.

    - Chris Mason allowed five goals on 18 shots in the 5-2 loss to Dallas. His lone in seven starts this season came back on Jan. 22nd.

    - Milan Michalek scored a goal in his first game back after over a month on the shelf.

    - Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 31-of-32 in the Blue Jackets 4-1 win over St. Louis.

    - Cam Atkinson added two points, a goal and an assist in that Columbus win.

    - Mark Giordano had a goal and an assist in the win over Phoenix. The goal came with just over 20 seconds remaining in OT.

    - Mike Smith has alternated wins and losses in his last four starts. Since Friday's game was a loss, guess that means start him next time out. Just find something else to watch if you do.
