Default Studs and Duds: April 11, 2013

    From myself and sixhands.

    Studs:

    He's Antti-sucking

    Antti Niemi:
Probably the most underrated fantasy player this season. He has now picked up points in nine of his last 10 games after making 27 saves in a 3-2 shootout victory (and if you didn’t see them, his shootout saves were unbelievable). Glad to see he can bounce back after a horrible game against Columbus the other night.

    Andrei the Giant

Andrei Markov: There were a lot of doubters going into the season when it came to his health, but Markov has had a great season. A goal and an assist last night now gives him 26 points on the year. He is tied for third goals amongst defencemen, and tied for fourth in points. And amazingly, 22 of those points (including every single goal) has come on the powerplay.

    Mike the Knight

Mike Richards: Richards had a great night last night, getting a goal and an assist, while being 8-for-10 in the faceoff dot. The former Flyer now has points in five straight games, and is on pace for a 56-point year in an 82-game season.

    Life of Brian

Brian Elliott: As long as I live, I will never figure out Brian Elliott, and how he can go on such hot and cold streaks. When he’s bad, he’s barely AHL-calibre, but when he’s going good, he looks like one of the best goalies in the world. Elliott has five straight wins, including three straight shutouts (watch out Brian Boucher). What’s funny is that how great he has been still hasn’t given him even half-decent overall stats (8-6-1 record, with a save percentage of .892). But at least he’s trending in the right direction.

    Honourable mentions:

Jussi Jokinen: Two goals, one assist, plus-two, and three shots last night. He’s really stepping up with Pittsburgh, with five points in three games.

Andrew Ladd: The Jet continues his great season with another two points last night. He’s almost a point-per-game player this season, with 38 points in 42 games.

Nicklas Backstrom: Backstrom continues his hot streak, with an assists last night. More impressive was his 13 and 8 faceoff record.

Josh Bailey: Two goals last night, and now has 16 points on the year. Seven of those points have come in the last six games.

    Duds

This week I am going to focus on the coupon clippers, you know those folks that score as much as they can with “giveaways”! Well the Thursday Dud’s edition is Target-ing the players that put their team at a disadvantage by “giving" the other team the puck and pretty much telling them to “score away”.

    Zdeno Chara – 3 Giveaways

I’m guessing someone pee’d on his beanstalk because he was not in his usual “fee-fi-fo-fum” mood tonight. He skated the most minutes on his team so obviously he was on the ice for one-of-the-two goals they let in. For crying out loud his shadow covers half the ice so surely his actual body should have blocked more than just one shot? And I find it hard to believe that he didn’t hit anyone, not a single hit. Nope, in 23 minutes of ice-time he only blocked one shot, threw a puck on net, didn’t “stanchion” anyone and clipped 3 coupons.

    Chara – 0 G, 0 A, - 1, 0 PIM, 1 SOG, 1 BS, 0 HITS, 3 Giveaways

    Tyler Myers – 3 Giveaways

Apparently there was a memo, circulated amongst the “taller” players in the league, asking them to play with shorter sticks! How else can you explain the giveaways? Monster Myers did however redeem himself with 2 shots on goal, 4 blocked shots and 3 hits but he still finished a minus-one and …. he also clipped 3 coupons.

    Myers – 0 G, 0 A, - 1, 0 PIM, 2 SOG, 4 BS, 3 HITS, 3 Giveaways

    Filip Kuba – 3 Giveaways

Not as tall as the two previously mentioned but the 6’4” defenseman also coughed up the puck three times to the opposition. Defensemen that log the second most minutes in a game are usually relied upon to shut down the top line or score goals. Kuba apparently didn’t feel like shooting the puck, he only had 1 shot on goal but he did block 4 others. He ended the night with a minus-one and 3 clipped coupons.

    Kuba – 0 G, 0 A, - 1, 0 PIM, 1 SOG, 4 BS, 0 HITS, 3 Giveaways

    Drew Doughty – 3 Giveaways

One usually wouldn’t "doubt" that a former 2nd overall draft pick of Doughty’s caliber could play as poorly as he did last night. Drew was on the ice for almost 30 minutes and all he could manage, against the last place Avs as well, was 2 shots on goal. He did have some other redeeming qualities, unfortunately not the ones that poolies are expecting. No goals, no assists just 2 blocked shots and 3 hits. And of course the reason why he made the dud list, he also clipped 3 coupons.

    Doughty – 0 G, 0 A, Even, 0 PIM, 2 SOG, 2 BS, 3 HITS, 3 Giveaways

    Afterthoughts

    Brian Campbell – 0 G, 0 A, -3, 2 SOG and 1 coupon.

    Milan Lucic – 0 G, 0 A, Even, 1 SOG, 2 HITS and 2 coupons.

    Sean Couturier – 0 G, 0 A, Even, 3 SOG, 1 Blocked Shot and 2 coupons.

    Vincent Lecavalier – 0 G, 0 A, -2, 0 SOG, 1 Blocked Shot, 2 HITS and 2 coupons.
