'Game of Thrones' casts major season 4 role: Oberyn the Red Viper -- EXCLUSIVE

"For those who haven’t read the books, here’s a spoiler-free description of the character: Oberyn is a brash, charming, cunning prince of Dorne (part of the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros). His sister Elia was brutally murdered by the Lannister knight Gregor “The Mountain” Clegane when Mad King Aerys was overthrown by Robert Baratheon and the Lannisters. In season four, Oberyn comes to King’s Landing with revenge on his mind."

Apparently he's a Martell. Didn't Tyrion marry the young Lannister kid to a Martell in season two? I think that was one of the very few times House Martell was mentioned in the show thus far.

Seems like we're going to be hearing a lot of House Martell is the upcoming season four.

    Indeed he is.

Elia Martell (of Dorne) was married to Prince Rhaegar Targaryen....so she was basically going to be the next queen once the Mad King died....which is why Gregor Clegane (the Mountain) raping and murdering her and her two babies is kind of a big deal to the Martells.

-Ned Stark is too honorable of a man to cheat on his wife with a commoner
-Unlikely that Ned would bring home his bastard child, knowing how the child offends his wife to no end and the shame it brings to her.
-If Ned did take in the bastard as his own true child, child would be Jon Stark, not Jon Snow
-Robert Baratheon blames the death of his true love Lyanna Stark at the hands of Prince Targaryen, and Ned never defends this arguement
-There has to be a reason why Ned would take in this child into the family with no questions asked, unless the child is family some how
-There is a reason why Ned did not tell anyone (including Jon), who the mother is to keep Jon's background unknown or his true identity protected
-There has to be a good reason why Jon's identity needs to be protected in fear of possible bloodlines and associated family retributions for various sources
-Lyanna Stark died while being captive of the Targaryens as per Robert's rage against them
-the books describe Jon Snow with very strong Stark-like appearance and features, even more than Ned's other kids

My own theory: Jon Snow is Jon Targaryen
(son of Rhaegar Targaryen and Lyanna Stark) mother probably died during child birth and Ned must keep Jon's identity secret from everyone, especially his own friend and king Robert Baratheon.

Since the writer never did write about Jon Snow's true background yet, this is all just wild guess at this point.
This is my fravorite theory, it just makes so much sense. Why else would the Kingsguard be in Dorne so far away from the king if not to protect Rhaegar's heir? Ned Stark found Lyanna bleeding to death in a bed before making a promise with her. There are lots of reasons for a woman to die bleeding in bed but with everything put together including the Kingsguard and Ned's promise it just seems right.

I think Jon and Dany are going to end up being the two pivotal people in the story. There are 3 dragons... One for each of them, and one for Bran who I think also gets in on the action either through being family or his warg-ness.

Wasn't Robert's Rebellion 20 years ago from where the timeline in the show is now? Isn't Snow supposed to be 14 years old? The math doesn't add up.

Not sure on the years since Robert's rebellion took place, but the back story is that Ned returned home to Winterfell after the war with Jon ... All in all it does add up.
