During the off-season, I will use this thread to keep up with all the latest news in baseball.

I'll update the thread as more news comes in.

    Here's my entry for today.

Baltimore: The Orioles have exercised the 2013 contract option on relief pitcher Luis Ayala. Ayala finished with a 2.64 ERA in 75 innings this season.

Minnesota: Scott Baker is set to become a free agent after the Twins declined the 2013 option on him. The Twins are still interested in signing him, but not at the price his option was worth. He is recovering from Tommy John surgery.

PJ Walters is also not in the Twins plans and now a free agent, he's merely a fifth starter at best.

Philadelphia: Carlos Ruiz did a lot to impress fans last year and the owners have noticed, as they're bringing him back for another year. The Phillies are not bringing back Ty Wigginton or Jose Contreras, as both are set to become free agents. Wigginton is a good utility man and Contreras can be effective pitching out the bullpen, expect both to catch on somewhere. Placido Polanco's 2013 option was declined as well, he will be a free agent.

New York (AL): As expected, the Bronx Bombers have exercised Robinson Cano's 2013 contract option and Curtis Granderson's option as well (each will earn $15 million next year). The team also decided to bring back David Aardsma, who should be much more healthy after recovering from Tommy John surgery.

Oakland: Grant Balfour will be back with club after Oakland exercised his 2013 contract option, he will earn $4.5 million in 2013. Stephen Drew's time with A's could be finished, as they declined his 2013 contract option.

Los Angeles (NL): The Dodgers declined the 2013 contract options for Todd Coffey, Juan Rivera and Matt Treanor. All are set to become to free agents.

Los Angeles (AL): The Angels are exploring the possibility of trading Dan Haren and Ervin Santana.

Toronto: The Blue Jays managerial search is believed to be down to a few candidates, I'll let Shi Davidi fill you in on that one: http://www.sportsnet.ca/baseball/201...al_candidates/

Several players, including Michael Bourn, Zack Greinke and Josh Hamilton are officially free agents.

Los Angeles (NL): Despite signing him to a five-year, $85 million contract extension, the Dodgers are willing to trade slugger Andre Ethier. For a guy that can drive in nearly 100 runs or more when healthy and a reasonable contract for a player of his caliber, expect a lot of teams to be interested. He's also a terrific defensive right fielder.

Cleveland: The Indians are the first team to dip into the Japanese market, signing 18-year-old outfielder Takuya Tsuchida. Financial terms still are not confirmed. Cleveland is also scouting Shohei Otani, who will land a big contract somewhere based on his skills and potential.

Atlanta: Cody Ross remains a priority for the Braves, as Brian McCann is expected to miss the beginning of the 2013 season and Ross is regarded as one of the best backup catchers in baseball. Atlanta officially exercised the contract options of Tim Hudson, Paul Maholm and Brian McCann.

Houston: Things won't get any easier for the Astros, as they will be moving to the American League West division with the Mariners, Angels, Athletics and Rangers. They are expected to do some shopping in the off-season, mostly for pitching and a designated hitter. Houston designated infielder Matt Downs for assignment today.

Detroit: Manager Jim Leyland is staying put, after the club agreed to extend him through the 2013 season. Detroit also exercised relief pitcher Octavio Dotel's contract option for 2013 and same goes for shortstop Jhonny Peralta. Detroit is not expected to bring back Jose Valverde or Delmon Young, but they would like to re-sign Anibal Sanchez.

Toronto: The Blue Jays have been granted permission by the Dodgers to speak with third base coach Tim Wallach. The Jays wanted to talk with Wallach last time they had a managerial opening, but they were not allowed to because of a clause in Wallach's contract. The managerial search appears to be down to Wallach, Don Wakamatsu, Sandy Alomar Jr. and DeMarlo Hale.

Boston: Interestingly enough, John Farrell appears to be bringing most of the staff with him to Boston. First base coach Torey Lovullo headed to Boston and now third base coach Brian Butterfield has agreed to join the Red Sox.

Tampa Bay: James Shields will be back another year, after the Rays exercised his 2013 contract option. Shields will make $10.25 million in the upcoming season.

Texas: Scott Feldman and Yoshinori Tateyama are not going to be back with they Rangers, as they had their 2013 contract options declined by the club.

Oakland: Dallas Braden and Joey Devine elect free agency.

    Happy Halloween everyone!

Los Angeles (NL): Brandon League and the Dodgers have agreed on a three-year contract, worth $22.5 million. According to GM Ned Colletti, League is the teams closer going forward.

LA is targeting Rays ace James Shields in trade talks as well, should be interesting to see where that goes.

Cleveland: Ubaldo Jimenez had his 2013 contract option exercised by the club today, while Travis Hafner and Roberto Hernandez (formerly Fausto Carmona) had their options declined. Jimenez will earn $5.75 million in 2013.

Kansas City: The Royals declined closer Joakim Soria's 2013 contract option, which makes him a free agent. Soria should receive some interest on the market, although he is coming off Tommy John surgery.

New York (AL): As expected, Rafael Soriano opted out of his contract with the Yankees and is now officially a free agent. Infielder Casey McGehee has also elected free agency.

Cincinnati: Ryan Ludwick declined his 2013 mutual option with the Reds and will pursue a multi-year deal on the open market. Ludwick finished with 26 home runs and a .275 batting average in 2012.

Houston: The Astros declined catcher Chris Snyder's 2013 contract option, making him a free agent.

Tampa Bay: Fernando Rodney and Jose Molina will be back with the club, after they had their 2013 contract options exercised. While Luke Scott had his contract option declined, making him a free agent.

Pittsburgh: The Pirates are bringing back Pedro Alvarez after picking up his option. Rod Barajas had his 2013 contract option declined and the club released relief pitcher Hisanori Takahashi.

Washington: The Yankees returned Rule-5 draft pick Brad Meyers to Washington today, after he spent the entire season on the disabled list. According to the Rule 5 draft rules, you must have that player spend at least 90 days on your active roster or else you have to return that player to his team.

Toronto: The Jays picked up Darren Oliver's 2013 option and declined Rajai Davis' option as well. However, the team re-signed Davis to a one-year deal, worth $2.5 million.

Arizona: 41-year-old veteran Henry Blanco had his option declined by Arizona, making him a free agent. At this point, he's nothing more than a veteran presence for a team.

    More to come!

This thread is strictly for rumors, waiver claims and news. Signings will have their own individual threads. The Ervin Santana deal is an exception.

    Here's the latest.

Atlanta: The Braves claimed outfielder Jordan Schafer off waivers from Houston today. He was traded to Houston in the deal that sent Michael Bourn to Atlanta.

Boston: Despite numerous attempts by the Angels to dump both big contracts of Dan Haren and Vernon Wells, the Red Sox insist they are only interested in Haren. Haren is likely to be dealt sooner rather than later, according to several sources.

San Francisco: It looks like Brandon Belt is the first baseman for San Fran, after the club declined veteran Aubrey Huff's contract option, making him a free agent.

Yankees are fishing, but no one is biting on A-Rod: Not only is his contract practically immovable, but it appears Alex Rodriguez just simply doesn't want to waive his no trade clause.

    More from Bob Nightengale: http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports...ville/1672933/

Show me the money: Michael Bourn isn't fooling around, as he's hired Scott Boras as his agent and is said to be seeking a $100 million contract.

Angels and Rangers fighting over Greinke?
After moving Ervin Santana yesterday and likely trading Haren anytime soon, the Angels are doing their best to re-sign Zack Greinke. However, should they not be able to sign him, Texas is seriously considering taking a run at the ace: http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?...s_mlb&c_id=mlb

The big news today involves the Toronto Blue Jays.

Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports suggests that the Jays are serious about acquiring pitching help, via free agency and the trade market.

Dan Haren's contract option was declined by the Angels, making him a free agent. The Cubs and Angels reportedly had a deal in place that would've sent Haren to the windy city in exchange for Carlos Marmol, but Chicago pulled the deal off the table.

Out of the list he mentions (Zack Greinke, Anibal Sanchez, Kyle Lohse and Ryan Dempster) I would love to see the Jays go get Greinke but I can only imagine what he's looking for when it comes to a deal. I don't think the Jays would have a problem with the annual salary but he is probably looking for a long term deal and the Jays have openly said they will not sign anyone to long term deals past 5 yrs. I don't blame them really. As far as the other 3, I see experience but no real ace there.

Scott Baker wouldn't be a bad signing, depending on how he recovers from his surgery.

Brandon McCarthy is becoming a hot commodity, as the Cubs, Blue Jays and White Sox are very interested in him. He could also potentially re-sign with Oakland. Despite a health scare towards the end of the season, McCarthy finished 2012 with a 8-6 record and an ERA of 2.96.

Mariano Rivera will be back for the 2013 season, but he's now a free agent and it is possible he will sign somewhere other than with the Yankees.

Lets take a look at what was in the news today.

Outfielder Josh Hamilton is seeking a seven-year deal, worth $175 million.

Minnesota has called the Rays with regards to ace James Shields, the Dodgers are also expected to be in on Shields as well as other clubs. It is possible that LA would deal Ethier to Tampa for Shields and then sign Josh Hamilton.

St. Louis is beginning talks with Adam Wainwright for a long term contract extension, as they would like to keep him a Cardinal for as long as possible.

In an interview with Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post- Dispatch, Wainwright had this to say.

"In brief talks with [Cardinals executives] they feel real good about me coming back for a long time, and I want to make that happen," Wainwright told Goold. "I don’t see any reason why we shouldn’t make that happen."

-Outfielder Cody Ross is seeking a three-year, $25 million contract at this point and the Red Sox aren't interested in giving him that much money.

-Boston has expressed interest in veteran gold glover Torii Hunter and Hunter would love to play with David Ortiz. "I'm open to anybody, especially if David is there," Hunter told WEEI.com in late August. "David is one of my guys. We were roommates in Minnesota and he's one of my brothers.”

-There is speculation that the Dan Haren trade fell apart because of health issues, as teams are looking at the veteran but with concern. His agents, CAA Sports will have to convince teams interested that he's healthy.

-Jeremy Bonderman has lost 35 pounds and is going to attempt a comeback to the bigs, although he hasn't pitched in the majors since 2010. More CBS here: http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/blog/ey...comeback-trail

-The Dodgers are reportedly eyeing Anibal Sanchez, according to Jayson Stark of ESPN: https://twitter.com/jaysonst/status/265923132307673088

-Joakim Soria has said he would set up for the Yankees if they do sign him, they have had interest in him for a while now. "If the Yankees call, we will be all ears," Soria's agent, Oscar Suarez, said by phone Monday. "If there is a fit, Joakim would be elated to work with Mo. He would close everywhere except there."

-Minnesota has agreed to sign Samuel Deduno and Esmerling Vasquez to minor-league contracts. More here: http://www.startribune.com/sports/tw...177311841.html

I'm going to add notes out of interest....and boredom

I think it's funny how much attention Ross is getting this off-season. Why? Whyyyy!

I'd like to see Hunter in Boston. I think that's a nice fit.

Good luck convincing anyone Haren's healthy!

Wouldn't touch Bonderman but hey, that's a heart warmer right thurr :P

Even though I despise the Yankees, Soria in pinstripes is another good fit. Can see him being a good setup guy in tandem with Soriano(when resigned?)/Robertson for Mo. When Mo retires, who knows what could happen.
