Newest Milwaukee Report from the Tennesean

    http://blogs.tennessean.com/predator...ukee-report-3/

    Here's some of the nuggets

On Ryan Ellis who hasn’t played yet (wrist)

“He has been practicing with the group for just under a week. Every day he’s getting closer, obviously.”

    On who has stood out

“Joonas Jarvinen really responded well with a real strong defensive effort (Saturday at Peoria). Gritty, determined and played very well and very strong in front of our net. We thought our entire defensive core has played very well. Jonathon Blum has been a guy that has stood out the last couple of games both offensively and defensively. That’s the most positive end of it was our defensive core.”

Lines shuffle at today's (March 1st) practice

Coach Barry Trotz moved around his lines again in Friday’s practice in San Jose. If these stick, Trotz has separated the Sergei Kostitsyn-Craig Smith-Rich Clune trio, which has been the Predators’ most effective line recently. That grouping has combined for six points its last two games.

Here are the lines from today’s practice

    Colin Wilson-Mike Fisher-Martin Erat

Smashville24/7 also released their Mid-season report card for the Pred's Defense. It's a good read and here it is:

The Nashville Predators have just about reached the halfway point of the 2012-13 NHL lockout shortened season. With 23 out of 48 regular season games played, it’s time to see how each player is measuring up at the midway part of the season. Today, we start with the defense…

    Jonathon Blum
Blum first saw action this season in Nashville’s eighth game against the San Jose Sharks and has come out of the lineup just once since. He played very well defensively at first and had a plus-4 rating through his first nine games. He hasn’t looked as solid recently and has posted a minus-2 rating in his last six games. Blum has notched one goal and four assists offensively so far. Seeing nearly 15 minutes of average ice time per game, Blum has improved a lot from where he was last season when he was sent back down to Milwaukee and stayed there for the entire season. Will he be able to elevate his game in the second half of the season?

    Grade: B-

    Ryan Ellis
The 22-year-old defenseman has been pretty solid for the most part so far this season. Ellis hasn’t necessarily done anything spectacular offensively or defensively, but he has shown that he usually makes the right decisions with the puck. Defensively, Ellis’ size will always limit him in battles along the boards and other physically demanding areas. However, Ellis makes up for his lack of size with great positioning. He’s posted a plus-1 rating and has tallied two power play goals and four assists so far this season. The Predators are going to need more offensive contributions from Ellis down the stretch.

    Grade: B+

    Hal Gill
Gill has struggled to consistently find his way into the lineup so far this season. He’s been the healthy scratch at times for the Predators so far this season and has recently been put on injured reserve with a lower-body injury. Gill has played in 15 games so far this season and has a rating of minus-1 in those 15 games. However, Gill is an extremely important part of the penalty kill; the Predators have not fared well shorthanded without him. The penalty kill is 41-for-50 (82.0%) with Gill in the lineup and 20-for-29 (68.9%) without him. That’s quite a discrepancy. If Gill can get healthy, he’s going to be important for the Predators in the second half of the season.

    Grade: C-

    Scott Hannan
Hannan has really struggled so far in his time with the Predators. The 34-year-old defenseman was brought in to add a stable, veteran force to a defense corps that is very young with the departure of Ryan Suter. Hannan has posted one assist offensively and has a rating of minus-9. That rating is 717th in the NHL. He also has been on the ice for nine of the last 13 power play goals against. Hannan has not been the solid, stable defensive veteran that he was brought in to be so far this season, and the Predators are going to need him to really elevate his game in the second half.

    Grade: F

    Roman Josi
For a second-year player burdened with the responsibility of “replacing” Suter, Josi has played extremely well so far this season. He’s played alongside Shea Weber for the majority of the season, which means he’s had to go against the top lines from the opposition on a nightly basis. Josi has improved defensively this season and has posted a plus-2 rating on a team that has trouble scoring goals. Josi has contributed offensively with three goals and four assists and has played about as well as anyone could have hoped given his new responsibilities. His average ice time of 22:27 is a solid bump up from his 18:23 average last season.

    Grade: A-

    Kevin Klein
During the early part of this season, Klein was arguably Nashville’s best defenseman. He was playing very well defensively and was contributing offensively. Klein hasn’t played as well recently, but who has? He does a lot of the little things for the Predators, like blocking shots and contributing on the penalty kill. Klein has an even plus-minus rating so far this season and has one goal and five assists offensively. He’s going to be a big part of Nashville’s defense corps in the second half of the season and years to come.
    Grade: B+

    Shea Weber
Nashville’s captain struggled offensively out of the gate. Weber was held off of the score sheet through the first nine games of the season, but has started to come on more offensively since then. He’s registered three goals and six assists for nine points, which is tied for third on the team. Defensively, Weber has been very solid. He goes against the best players every night and has a plus-3 rating. He is an intimidating presence on the blueline and is one of the best defensive player in the world. Like it or not, signing a 14-year, $110 million deal sets the bar high. Weber has been good so far this season, but hasn’t reached that bar yet.

Smashville24/7 released their Mid-season report card for the Pred's Goaltenders.

    Chris Mason
Mason was brought back for a third stint in the Music City to be a veteran backup goaltender that would be able to step in when Pekka Rinne needed a rest and deliver solid performances in net. So far this season, Mason has played well in two of the three starts he’s had. Mason got Nashville’s first win of the season on Jan. 22 against the Minnesota Wild in his first start. Mason’s second start was also against Minnesota on Feb. 9, where he got the loss in overtime but played well for the Predators, stopping 30 of 32 shots. His third start, which came against the Colorado Avalanche on Feb. 18, was a complete disaster. He kicked Colorado’s first goal into his own net and went on to allow six goals in what was arguably the craziest game of the season so far for the Predators. Mason has appeared in two more games after that, facing Anaheim and Los Angeles in the third period after Rinne had been pulled.

Mason’s numbers so far this season aren’t anything spectacular. He’s posted a 1-1-1 record with a 2.89 GAA and a .900 save percentage. Other than the debacle in Colorado, Mason has been pretty good for the Predators. He hasn’t played very much and isn’t likely to find a whole lot more playing time in the second half of the season as the playoffs draw closer. However, he will still be called upon to steal a game or two, and those games could prove to be huge for the Predators.

    Grade: C+

    Pekka Rinne
Rinne has easily been the most valuable player for the Predators so far this season. He’s had to keep his team in games all season long because the Predators are having serious issues with finding ways to score goals. Rinne’s record of 8-8-4 doesn’t stand out at all, but his 2.25 GAA and .914 save percentage are admirable and he is tied for first in the league with three shutouts. Rinne had a dominant stretch near the middle of February when he had three shutouts against Los Angeles, San Jose and Phoenix in a four-start span. However, Rinne has not played as well as of late and hasn’t been getting very much help from his teammates offensively or defensively.

Rinne almost has to be in superhuman form every night for the Predators to consistently win hockey games. That’s a lot to ask of the two-time Vezina Trophy nominee. Rinne has played very well this season. There have been times where he’s looked a little bit shaky, but he’s been very solid for the most part. Now, he just needs to get a little bit of help from his teammates.

Rumblings have been going on for the past few days due to the offensive woes. Thus the addition of Butler, Boychuk and Bartley. Here's an insert from the Examiner (and the link) that can give you some insight what to expect on Friday night against Edmonton.

Note: Also Halischuk was sent to milwaukee for a conditioning assignment after this article was written.

    Link http://www.examiner.com/article/new-...thers-will-sit

    and insert below

Nick Spaling and Matt Halischuk were wearing light blue jerseys at practice, and those are usually worn by the team’s extra forwards. Halischuk has failed to gain much traction at all this season and has yet to score a goal. Spaling’s play has slipped as of late, and it appears that he may miss his first game of the season Friday.

“Obviously things aren’t going well, so there are going to be changes made,” Spaling said. “That’s the outcome when you have a rough patch. I just have to worry about getting back to playing the way I can play and just working hard to get back in.”

Spaling is second among Nashville forwards in shorthanded time on ice per game at 2:32. Strong penalty killing has usually been a hallmark of the Predators, but the team now sits 26th in the NHL in that category with a 77.2 percent success rate. Nashville has allowed two power-play goals against in each of their last four games.

“Our special teams have gone south the last little while,” Trotz said. “Now the penalty kill is about 50% in the last five games. You can’t win that way.”

On the blue line, look for Jonathon Blum to be the one taken out in favor of Bartley, who is looking to make his NHL debut Friday. While Blum is the likely candidate to come out, Scott Hannan and Ryan Ellis probably should not feel too comfortable with their spots in the lineup either

Smashville24/7 released their Mid-season report card for the Pred's Forwards.

    Gabriel Bourque
Bourque is the leading goal scorer for the Predators through the first 23 games of the season. Yes, you read that right. Bourque’s six goals leads a Nashville team that is struggling to score almost on a nightly basis. Bourque has been a valuable two-way asset for the Predators so far during his young career. He’s been one of the most consistent forwards for Nashville so far this season and will play a big role in the second half. Bourque has a plus-5 rating and has scored two game-winning goals thus far.

    Grade: A-

    Rich Clune
Clune, picked up on waivers prior to opening night, has been a tenacious forward that has appeared in 22 of the 23 games for the Predators so far this season. He has sort of been the replacement for both Jordin Tootoo and Brian McGrattan. Perhaps he doesn’t execute the energy role as well as Tootoo does nor is he the enforcer that McGrattan is, but his game is a mix that has elements of both roles. He’s also shown glimpses of being effective offensively, notching one goal and two assists on his fourth line assignment. Clune’s effort and intensity have allowed him to be an effective player, particularly of late alongside Craig Smith and Sergei Kostitsyn.

    Grade: B-

    Martin Erat
Erat is second on the team in scoring with 12 points but has only registered five points in his last 14 games. He started off very well on the offensive side of the puck, racking up four points in Nashville’s first three games. Since then, Erat has been inconsistent. His three goals and nine assists through 23 games aren’t awful, but he has shown the ability in the past to be more consistent than those numbers suggest. Erat has a minus-4 rating on the season so far. Look for him to be more effective in the second half of the season.

    Grade: C-

    Mike Fisher
Fisher had 51 points in the 2011-12 season. At his current pace, Fisher wouldn’t even come close to that mark over the course of an 82-game season. Fisher has just eight points (4g, 4a) in the first 23 games of the season. The Predators aren’t going anywhere this season if those numbers don’t increase dramatically in the second half. Defensively, Fisher has played pretty well. He’s been blocking shots and backchecking well. However, he’s got to pick it up on the offensive side of the puck.

    Grade: D

    Paul Gaustad
Gaustad has played in just 16 of Nashville’s 23 contests so far this season. He has won a staggering 182 of 290 (62.8%) of the faceoffs he’s taken so far this season, which is the highest winning percentage in the league for players who have taken over 100 draws. He’s been money in the faceoff circle, but has only contributed three points (1g, 2a) offensively. After signing a four-year, $13 million contract in the off-season, the Predators would probably like to see him contribute a little more offensively.

    Grade: B-

    Matt Halischuk
Halischuk has also only played in 16 of Nashville’s 23 contests so far this season and has found himself as the healthy scratch with a pretty high degree of regularity. To be frank, Halischuk has not played his way back into the lineup when he has seen the ice. In the 2011-12 season, Halischuk scored 15 goals mostly as a fourth line player. He hasn’t contributed much this season, registering just one assist in the 16 games he has played. Halischuk hasn’t played that well on the defensive end either and has a minus-4 rating.

    Grade: F

    Patric Hornqvist
Hornqvist has missed some time due to injury so far this season, playing in only 13 of Nashville’s 23 games. Despite missing 10 games due to injury, Hornqvist still leads all forwards with 53 shots on goal, including 12 shots on goal on Feb. 18 against the Colorado Avalanche. Hornqvist only has two goals this season and seven points total. His offense hasn’t been anything special, but he is creating a lot of chances. One would think those shots will start translating into goals sooner or later.

    Grade: C+

    Sergei Kostitsyn
Kositsyn has registered only nine points in 23 games and has been wildly inconsistent so far in 2012-13. There have been stretches where he has played well, and there have also been stretches where he has been virtually invisible. The Predators are going to need a lot more from him both offensively and defensively in the second half of the season. Kostitsyn seems to have been finding his groove a little bit over the past 10 games. He leads the team in the plus-minus rating at a plus-6 but has got to start finding ways to produce more.

    Grade: D+

    David Legwand
Legwand has not played well so far this season. He has only registered seven points in 23 games, including two points in his last 10 games. Legwand hasn’t been as strong defensively or on the penalty kill as he normally is, either. Legwand has an even plus-minus rating, but the lack of offense from him has been very concerning for the Predators. Much like Fisher, they’re going to need him to get going in the second half of the season or it will be very hard to make the playoffs.

    Grade: F

    Craig Smith
Smith struggled mightily coming out of the gate but appears to be on his way toward being more consistent offensively. Smith only has five points (3g, 2a) this season, but four of those points have come in the last eight games. Smith was held without a point through the first 10 games of the season. His speed and natural playmaking ability have created some good chances for him that simply haven’t found their way to the back of the net. If his recent play is any indication, Smith should be poised for a pretty good second half.

    Grade: C-

    Nick Spaling
Spaling has registered five points (3g, 2a) in 23 games so far this season, and the Predators have won every game in which he’s scored a goal. However, he has not been good defensively this season, which is not normal. Spaling has a minus-7 rating so far this season, which is the worst among forwards on the roster. He has to play better in his own end as the season moves forward and also needs to find ways to bury the chances he gets offensively.

    Grade: D-

    Colin Wilson
Wilson leads the team with 15 points (5g, 10a) and has arguably been Nashville’s best forward all season long. He has not been as consistent over the last six games, registering just one point. However, Wilson had a dominant stretch earlier in the year where he registered 13 points in 10 games. If he can regain that level of dominance, he could be the offensive catalyst the Predators desperately need in the second half. Wilson has played better defensively in stretches throughout the season but does have a minus-1 rating. Still, Wilson’s play has been about as solid as it gets for the Predators.

    Grade: A-

    Brandon Yip
Yip has played well offensively in some games, defensively in other games and has provided a spark with his physical play at other times. Yip has only played in 19 of Nashville’s 23 games so far this season. He’s been the healthy scratch a few times and just recently suffered an upper-body injury against the Sharks. Yip has registered five points (2g, 3a) so far this season and has an even plus-minus rating. Yip hasn’t done anything spectacular, but he hasn’t done anything to hurt the team in a negative way either.
