I'm pretty sure he's been totally shut down for the time being. I could be wrong though, as there's been no official update on his condition in some time. I will, however, say one thing on the "unofficial" front:

My father owns a bar across the street from Consol Energy Center, and Bylsma was in for lunch the other day before the Wings game. He and my father were talking about head-injuries, and Bylsma confided some things about the Letang injury. He had no symptoms for 3-4 days after the MaxPac hit, and it's really just a mystery to everyone how he is going to progress. There's really nothing good to report.

If you look at Bylsma's quote from the "Coachspeak" section I posted earlier today, you will notice he's pretty much baffled by concussions, as we all are.

Sorry guys, tonight the ramblings won't be as extensive; I also apologize for the tardiness. In any event, they should be up tomorrow... It's been a long day.

Good to see the Pens finally represented here. Unfortunately I don't have time to contribute much here but good to see mounD stepping up and doing great job. Keep up the good the work!

Default 12/16/11 @ Ottawa Senators [1st period Recap]

... Again, sorry for the tardiness; I figured some of you guys wouldn't mind the analysis though. Here you go:

    Pre-Game Notes:
    - Staal did not take warm-ups [was a game-time decision], and did not play Friday.

    - Picard and Tangradi were called up from Wilkes-Barre. I'm anxious to see how Tangradi will be used during this call-up.

    - "The Brothers Michalek" : both Michalek brothers currently out of the lineup, suffering from concussion-like symptoms. Epidemic City.

    - Like I've been telling you guys, Niskanen is a legitimate pickup in a lot of formats while Letang [and now Martin, as well] is on the shelf. He is leading Penguins D in ice-time, and PP TOI, and also has 4A over his past 5 games. He is also the Penguins +/- leader; he's quickly brushing off the remnants of being called a "throw-in" in the James Neal trade.

    Line Combinations:

    Kunitz-Malkin-Neal
    Sullivan-Dupuis-Kennedy
    Cooke-Vitale-Asham
    Tangradi-Adams-MacIntyre

    Orpik-Niskanen
    Engo-Martin
    Despres-Picard
    - Starting line was Cooke/Dupuis/Kennedy; Bylsma switched up a lot of the line combinations [as per usual]; however Neal/Malkin/Kunitz remained largely intact for the majority of the game. This is basically the only "safe" line to remain together at this point in my opinion.

-Tangradi w/ SOG on his first shift. The kid is a big, physical power forward. Not much opportunity with skilled forwards [linemates Adams, Big Mac].

    - Early penalty call on Niskanen, stick tied up in Daugavins' skates w/ 15:33 remaining... 2 min for tripping.

    - Erik Karlsson is a STUD. No surprises here. Penalty killed by Pens...

    - James Neal with a prime scoring chance off a bad defensive turnover, w/ about 4:40 remaining in the period... with a rebound lying in the crease, Neal can't swipe the puck home, and Auld manages to sweep the puck away to safety.

-Tyler Kennedy shot leads to Dupuis rebound opportunity w/ ~3:30 remaining. Poked just wide on the rebound.

    - Overall strong play from the Kunitz / Malkin / Neal line this period. As I've said before, I don't see Malkin/Neal duo being broken up for any reason. They just have had good chemistry all season long.

    - With ~1 min remaining the 1st period, both teams have great chances off an Ottawa 3-1 and a Penguins 3-2. Both to no avail. Malkin backhand opportunity shot wide on the latter.

    -Scoreless after 60 minutes.

    1st Period Stats:

    Shots: PIT 11, OTT 9
    Chances: PIT 5, OTT 3
Faceoffs Won: PIT 11, OTT 11
    Powerplay: PIT 0-0, OTT 0-1

Default 12/16/11 @ Ottawa Senators [2nd period Recap]

Firewagon Hockey [aka the 2nd period]

    - Colin Greening opened the scoring off a perfect setup from Jason Spezza at 0:25 of the period. 1-0 Sens. The floodgates opened up soon after...

    - Stevey Sullivan answers with a goal at 1:36 of the period off a feed from Asham. Sullivan goes top cheese over Auld's blocker side. score tied 1-1.

    - The floodgates have officially opened... Jason Spezza answers back at 2:04 of the period... 2-1 Sens. Karlsson keep in and a defensive turnover combine to keep the Sens offense rolling. Assists go to Karlsson and Alfie.

    - In a great display of firewagon hockey, Kennedy comes back w/ a couple great scoring opportunities ~5 min of the period. Auld up to the task on both TK Shots. Over the first few minutes of the 2nd period, Tyler Kennedy amassed 6 SOG.

    - Very dominant play from the Penguins over this few minute stretch...

    - Sullivan almost goes top cheese AGAIN ~6:30 of the period on the backhand. Auld up to the task this time.

    - Alfredsson then scored at 6:45 of the 2nd period to give the Sens a 3-1 lead; Another point for Spezza on this one, he's having a great offensive game thus far.

    - Daugavins with a goalie interference penalty at 7:20 of the period; BIG PP opportunity for the Penguins here.

    PP Combinations:

    Neal/Malkin/Kunitz
    Sullivan-Niskanen
    - Not much doing on this PP opportunity, outside of a sneaky bad-angle shot from Neal early on. He is never afraid to shoot the puck, obviously.

    - Simon Despres got some time on the 2nd PP unit. Looked pretty good.

    - Second PP chance for the Penguins at 11:00 of the 2nd period. Another big opportunity.

    - MY boy Niskanen scores right off the draw with a solid point shot. Assists go to Sullivan and Kunitz. We've got ourselves a game...

    - Penguins go back on the PP at 12:06 of the 2nd period on a Daniel Alfredsson hi-sticking penalty; Malkin would not disappoint.

    - Geno Malkin scores another goal right off the faceoff, with a laser tying the game at 3-3. Tonight marks the Penguins FIRST multi-PPG game since Nov 11th against Dallas. Not a good stat.

    - Foligno off the rush, rings a shot off the pipe with ~7 min to play in the period.

    - 13:20 of the 2nd period; Cowen gives the Senators the lead back on a flukey goal off Brooks Orpik's skate. Assists go to Foligno and Karlsson.

    - FIREWAGON HOCKEY, BABY!

    - Matt Carkner tripping penalty at 14:05 puts the Penguins on the PP again; the Sens are giving the Penguins a ton of chances right now, and the Pens NEED to capitalize.

    - Malkin looking dynamic again... I seriously love this guy so much. One of the most deceptive, slippery players in the NHL.

-Sens kill off the penalty and get a chance of their own at 16:09 on a Pascal Dupuis holding call; however, the Penguins kill this pp chance off as well.

    - Lee shot off the post with near 45 seconds left... Whew.

    - Hi-sticking penalty on Picard with 9 seconds remaining in the period. It looked like the Penguins would start the 3rd on the PK until...

    - Konopka tips a Karlsson point-shot through Johnson's 5 hole to give the Senators a 5-3 lead. Things were getting pretty ridiculous about this time...

    - Three PPG this period; all scored within 8 seconds of the initial faceoff. Puck possession and faceoffs are so damn crucial.

    - The Senators have 5g on 10 SOG in the 2nd period.

    Through 2 Periods:

    Sullivan - 3 pts. [1g, 2a; 3 sog]
    Karlsson - 3 pts [3a]

    Stats [Totals]

    Shots: PIT 24, OTT 19
    Faceoffs: PIT 21, OTT 26

    2nd Period Shots:

    PIT 13, OTT 10

Default 12/16/11 @ Ottawa Senators [2rd period Recap / Game Notes]

    - Good work from the Penguins on the forecheck early in the period, especially Aaron Asham. Shot from Kennedt off the rush.

    - Neal leaves the game w/ ~16 min remaining in the period for "minor repairs" after an apparent high stick from Daugavins [no call]. Despres and Tangradi combine for a nice chance shortly after.

    - With 14:50 left in the game Malkin misses a chance w/ a wide open net when his "dream chance" is blocked in front of the open net by one of the Sens players.

    - MUCH slower paced 3rd period; that 2nd period was some great hockey. Great example of why I love this game - second period, that is.

    - Malkin has a nice opportunity off the side of the net w/ 11 minutes remaining. This is some pretty atypical Geno, and we've been seeing more off-the-rush opportunities lately. This is very good news, as it's likely an indication that his knee is feeling beautiful.

    - Asham rings one off the bar at 12:00 of the 3rd period. Still 5-3 Senators at this point.

    - Spezza scores another goal [4- point night for those counting] on a break at 12:23 of the period to make it 6-3 Sens; Sneaking up on Giroux for the scoring lead. Spezza now has 36 points on the season...

    - James Neal interference penalty at 12:55 of the period on a somewhat questionable call in my opinion. Neal was pushed into Auld and Auld slipped up a bit; Ottawa goes on the PP again [1-3 on the man advantage so far].

    - Cookie w/ a SH breakaway and Dupuis with a rebound chacne shortly after; Great poise by Alex Auld on the opportunities. Up to the task on some big saves tonight.

    - Despres was used on the PK... looked pretty good tonight.

    - speaking of Despres, he gets a kneeing penalty at 14:52 of the period. Not a good play or penalty.

    - Bigtime save on Alfie by Fleury flashing the left pad. Huge City.

    - More D-men injuries for the Penguins. Paul Martin leaves the game.

    - Tangradi puts one off the post right after the Despres penalty is killed off; game remains 6-3 Senators.

    - Post count: Sens 2 - Pens 2.

    - The Pittsburgh Penguins have outshot their opponent [includiing tonight] in 15 of their last 18 games. Sometimes it's not a recipe for success...

    - Kunitz tip on a Despres shot w/ 1:02 left in the game [Malkin draws the other Assist], to bring the game closer at 6-4 Sens. Goal was under review as Kunitz's stick was about chest height; however the call on the ice stands: Good Goal.

    - Nothing doing in the last minute or so; Some good chances from the Penguins over the course of this period / game... Sens win 6-4.

    Three Stars:

    1. Jason Spezza [2g, 2a, +4, 2 SOG]
    2. Jared Cowen [1g, 3a, +4, 2 SOG]
    3. Erik Karlsson [3a, +3, 5 SOG]

    Honorable Mentions:

    - Geno Malkin had 1g, 1a and 3 SOG tonight. Certainly another solid effort from the big Russian with Crosby out of the lineup. Need more efforts like tonight if this team is going to be successful in the long-term.

    - Daniel Alfredsson 1g, 2a, +4, 4 SOG had a very solid game tonight. Many Senators got on the board, but Alfredsson looked particularly dangerous tonight.

    - Stevey Sullivan 1g, 2a, 3 SOG on the night for the wily veteran. It's great to see Sully get on the board w/ nights like tonight. Has to be good for his confidence going forward.

Default 12/17/11 vs. Buffalo Sabres [Game Recap]

Sorry guys... I'm just going from box-scores tonight, and memory from watching the game earlier. Tonight's game recap won't be broken down by period, just an expanded Three Stars section with some thoughts...

    Game Highlights

    http://video.penguins.nhl.com/videoc...onsole?hl=true

    Three Stars:

    1. Geno Malkin [3g, 2a, +1, 4 SOG] He was an absolute beast tonight, and he would not be denied. Scoring goals against both Sabres netminders in a total laugher, Geno was tonight's performer extraordinaire.

    2. Simon Despres [1g, +2, 2 SOG] Despres scored his first NHL goal tonight, and played a great all-around game. He was solid defensively, and was featured on the PP for a lot of the game. Solid night for the young blueliner.

    3. James Neal [1g, 1a, +1, 3 SOG] Neal had a another great night at consol Energy Center. He's really a fantastic player at home, where he's scored most of his goals this year. He added another PPG tonight, and both his point came w/ the man advantage.

    Honorable / Dishonorable Mentions:

-MAF notched his 200th career win tonight. Not one of his more amazing efforts, but when you achieve a milestone like that, you deserve a mention. Congratulations on 200, Marc-Andre.

    - Tonight was a terrible night for the Sabres goaltenders, and I will give both Enroth and Miller a dishonorable mention tonight. Sabres goalies stopped just 18 of 26 Penguins shots on Saturday night, and both goaltenders looked pretty shaky over the course of the night. Things got off to a bad start 2:17 into the game when Jason Williams scored a weak goal pretty much from outside the blueline... Bad stuff from Miller.

    - After being injured and scratched on and off for much of the year, Williams made a pretty solid impact tonight for the Penguins. He scored a goal and added an assist in just over 13 minutes of ice-time. He saw some time with Malkin during the 2nd period, but that didn't last very long.

    - Thomas Vanek continues to produce. He scored a goal tonight, and was one of only a few Sabres skaters to finish with an Even or better +/- rating.

    - Big props to Paul Gaustad for finishing the game with a +3 rating. In a game where your team allows 8 goals, it's not very often you see a skater finishing with a +3 rating. In fact, nobody on the Penguins had a +3 rating - although two Penguins finished with a +2 rating.

    Default Sidney Crosby News

Some interesting comments from GM Ray Shero about Crosby's future w/ the Penguins organization:

    http://www.pittsburghlive.com/x/pitt...yke7fk.twitter

"The only thing on my mind is signing Sidney Crosby," Shero said. "We want him to be a Penguin for life. That's the goal. Nothing has changed."
"I'm under the assumption that he's going to play in the NHL for another 10 or 15 years," Shero said of Crosby, who turned 24 in August. "We all know he's the best player in the league when he's healthy. My mindset on Sidney Crosby is not changing. We want to sign him."
Is this just wishful thinking, or does Shero know something we don't???

Per the Penguins website this morning:

    http://penguins.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=607123

The Pittsburgh Penguins have re-assigned defensemen Carl Sneep and Brian Strait to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League, it was announced today by executive vice president and general manager Ray Shero.

Sneep, 24, made his NHL debut for Pittsburgh last night, collecting his first NHL point (assist) and posting a plus-1 rating in 16:19 minutes against the Buffalo Sabres.

Strait, 23, has been sidelined the last 25 games after suffering a hyper-extended elbow in a game against the Minnesota Wild on Oct. 18. Strait has appeared in one game this season with Pittsburgh.

Default ...excerpt from Chris Nichols Dobberhockey Ramblings [Dec 18th]

Evgeni Malkin delivered another stellar performance Saturday, this time a five-pointer against the Sabres in an 8-3 shellacking. He has points in five straight and this was his fourth multi-pointer in that span. He has eight games of at least two points in his past 13 starts. Dominant. The crowd was chanting, “Geno! Geno!†This was his fourth career five-point outing.
Matt Niskanen has points in six of seven and he’s taking full advantage of the injury to Kris Letang with oddles of power play time. At the rate Penguins are being injured, Simon Despres may be running PP1 by the New Year. Dan Bylsma said earlier today Letang is still not skating and that anything he might be doing at this point is still light. The wait continues.
    Thoughts:

    - Ok so clearly Geno Malkin has been a dominant player this season, especially in the absence of Crosby; I am firmly in the camp that believes that Malkin is a better player w/o Sid in the lineup, as he thrives in the "number one" role. We're certainly seeing some magic from Evgeni lately, and you've got to believe he's a favorite to win the scoring title at this point [with good health]. I feel he could even miss a few more games and still contend for 90+ numbers by seasons end.

    - Some more vindication for Matty Niskanen [and a little bit myself for recommending him as a pickup]. He's really blossomed into a quality option in Letang's absence, which could be quite a while longer...

    - With Letang, still not skating... Obviously this is not good news; it appears the concussion he is dealing with might just be on the "moderate" to "severe" side. It's really anyone's guess at this point when he'll be back skating, or even doing more than light-workout.

To clarify, those are just my words...

I wasn't quoting anyone in particular. There is no official update on Letang outside the fact that he's not skating, and only doing light-workouts. I'm pretty much just just estimating that his concussion is "moderate" to "severe" based on the facts I've seen.

    Sorry for the confusion.

Here's a nice little article from the Pittsburgh Trib Live on Paul Martin's recent injury:

    http://www.pittsburghlive.com/x/pitt...rce=rss&feed=8

Defenseman Paul Martin was out of the Penguins' lineup against Buffalo on Saturday because of a lower body injury he suffered against Ottawa early in the third period of Friday's 6-4 loss.

Coach Dan Bylsma said before the game he does not know the extent of the injury, calling Martin's status day-to-day.

With the Penguins riddled with injuries, the club Saturday called up defenseman Carl Sneep and forward Jason Williams from their Wilkes-Barre/Scranton AHL affiliate. Williams has played in two games with the Penguins this season. Sneep was making his NHL debut.

Martin has been a workhorse for the Penguins since signing a five-year, $25 million free-agent contract in 2010. He appeared in all but five games last season and in all 32 games this year, playing added minutes with fellow defensemen Kris Letang, Zbynek Michalek, Brian Strait and Ben Lovejoy all on the injured reserve list.

Well the fact that he able to do light workouts is positive as far as I'm concerned. I was fearing the worse - a la Crosby.
