    Default Ty Rattie's upside?

St.Louis Blues second round pick in the 2011 draft, Ty Rattie (18), is currently shredding the WHL, with 20 goals and 38 points in his first 23 games. (scored 28/79 in 67 games last year)

Interested to hear some thoughts on him, and how people view his long term potential.

Portland has been pumping out the prospects in recent years:

Niederreiter, Johansen, Joe Morrow, Rattie, Bartschi, etc etc.

Rattie's got upside of course. Size and speed are issues, but not impossible to overcome. He is a terrific playmaker.

Haven't seen him yet this season, but I've watched him quite a bit in Portland the last couple years. I love having him in a Hawks sweater, but I just don't know about his upside at the NHL level. He does have a nice shot and he's amazing with the puck on his stick in general, but I'm not totally sold on him. He has a lot of holes in his game he needs to work out....he could very well be an impact player in the NHL, but I wouldn't be surprised if he became this next generation's Alexandre Giroux, either.

Derrick Pouliot is the next prospect in line to become a high NHL draft pick from Portland.

I'm a big fan of Ty Rattie and really hope that Team Canada gives him an offensive role on the WJC team this year. He makes everyone around him better.

6 weeks have passed since the last update in this thread...does Ty Rattie project to be a top 6 forward with the offensive skills to be a 60+ point player in the NHL?

    40 goals, 78pts....in 43 games.

He's looking like he has the potential to be a top 6, 60+ point winger in the NHL someday, imo.

He is listed with 5'11 and 161 lbs.

Unless he gains some weight he doesnt have a bright future ahead of him at all
And then it remains to be seen how he plays with 10-20 lbs more.

Therefore, short-term, or next year, I'm not high on him.

Cool perspective. Also, cool photo... who is that?

Sleeper: Val-d'Or's Kristopher Letang was overlooked for two reasons this year: first, he's a bit undersized at just 6-0, 188 pounds. Second, everyone was looking at his defensive teammate, Bourdon. The question for Letang is whether his tremendous skating and smarts overcome his lack of size?

Before the actual 11 draft, I felt this kid was the real sleeper. His skating wasnt that bad, he just seemed to lack power. As he gets stronger, it should improve. He might need 2 more yrs just to increase his strength as he was real skinny last season. Id like him more on another team however.

Default More fuel on the fire...

    He's now got 13G and 21Pts in 9 games.

Let's put this into some perspective. In Claude Giroux's phenomenal post-season in Gatineau, he was able to put up 17 goals and 51 points in 19 games which is good for a 2.68ppg clip. This year, Rattie is posting points at a 2.33ppg clip. What's more impressive is that most of his points are of the goal variety. Now take this into account, the year that Giroux had his breakout performance was when he started the season as a 19-year-old. Rattie is doing this as an 18-year-old. I'm not saying that Rattie will be the next Giroux, but he's certainly making the St Louis scouting department look smart by taking him 32nd overall.

One final comparison...Giroux stands at 5'11'' weighing 172lbs according to NHL.com while Rattie stands at 6'0'' weighing 173lbs according to the WHL website
