    Default "Goaler"

Over the years I've been seeing people, mainly French-speaking but also others, use the term "goaler" for goalies. Just how common is that? Does anyone know where it comes from, a certain person or announcer or something like that? I've just always thought goalies were the ubiquitous term.

its probably more a French Canadian thing than anything...I've heard francophones say 'goleur' before, perhaps thats what you mean?

This is funny. I remember as a kid growing up in South Philly, my friends and I called goalies "goalers". I don't know where and when we picked it up, but for years we called them that.

    Haha

I don't see it that often, but often enough to ask about it. Go to the Montreal board on HFboards and you're bound to come across it sooner or later.

I'm from Quebec and everybody here use the term "goaler". Nobody (almost) knows the meaning of the english word. For us, "goaler" is the english word for "gardien". We use a lot of english words or expressions, but you'll never ear goalie here. We use "goaler" (goleur).
Even PJ Stock uses "goaler" when he's on the RDS panel. He probably knows very well what's a "goaler", but when he speaks with francophones, it's an acceptable word.

    Edit:
when I search for the meaning of "goalie" on google, I found that it's a word for goalkeeper in ice hockey...

Even google translate is translating "goaler" to "gardien de but".

There's another word for "goaler"? What?

Either way, I'm not quite sure if I confuse the bolded statement as goaler being the Quebec equivalent. I know that the Quebec french is different then Canadian french which are both different from France french.

Although I say goalie when I talk about goaltenders in a french sentence for some reason...

Haha. South Jersey is more "Philly" than most of the Philly burbs to be honest. South Jersey and Delaware County are where most "Philly" people end up when they no longer want to risk getting shot over a parking space.

And this was actually street hockey I'm referring to. We used to play on the 4-wheel skates (pre-Rollerblades) and used small rolls of black electrical tape as pucks. The goaler would be rocking the plastic Mylec pads and plastic mask like Bernie Parent.

Some other funny terms I grew up on were:

"Waffle Board" - which is the blocker glove.
    "Claw" - the trapper glove.
