Two shorts infos from the camp:

    - Matthias has been offered a two way two seasons contract
    - Keaton Ellerby has added 20 lbs to get ready to compete for a roster spot.

    The overlooked signings

If the media is talking about the overhaul the Panthers made with their roster this offseason the names not mentioned a lot are Marcel Goc and Sean Bergenheim.

Goc and Bergenheim are still afterthoughts despite the fact both of those guys had tremendous seasons in 2010-2011 for their respective teams.

    Marcel Goc

Goc, continues the legacy of German players in a Panthers uniform over the last seasons (Seidenberg, Sulzer), was on pace for a career year in Music City before the injury bug bit him.
Marcel post 24 points in only 51 games with a great plus ten rating in the process. On top of that he played as top cog in the penalty-killing department for the Preds. And that is the main reason the Panthers brought him in. Most of the FA signings are mainly offensive guys with not that much interest into defensive. Goc provides the complete opposite. He is always very responsible when he hits the ice. He will be paired with the already good Kittens PK unit and see a lot of time there.

    Fantasy outlook:

Assuming he stays healthy he should have locked up that third center spot in the lineup plus the first penalty kill duties. The third line will most certainly be another scoring line that should result in some solid numbers for Goc next season. A career season should be a strong possibility. Goc will not explode but he should be able to hit 35 points. Since Goc should have natural scoring wingers Iīd expect a few less goals and a more assist-heavy campaign. His shots on goals should stay the same with more games played but donīt expect a huge boost here. The department that will see the biggest drop is definitely his plus/minus.

Goc provides a solid option for deeper fantasy keeper pools as he is still young enough and should be able to provide those numbers for several seasons.

    Sean Bergenheim

On the other hand there is Sean Bergenheim, I must admit I didnīt knew a whole lot about the 25-year-old Finn before his stellar playoff production. He had 29 points in the 2010/11 campaign but added 11 points in 16 games in the playoffs.

But what does that really mean, are all of those unexpected playoff heroes like Joel Ward worth our attention? We all should remember Pisaniīs playoff production; how out of the sudden he was hyped to be a lock for a top six role and what happened after that.

Bergenheim once was first round pick by NYI in the years where the Isles used to waste each and every pick on crap back then in 2002. He only played 75 games plus, two times before and never had a better season than the last one. For Bergenheim on Long Island, most of the time his lack of production wasnīt for the lack of opportunity. Sean played on a barely alive offensive team with the Islanders and still couldnīt find a way to get top-six minutes, which usually is not a good sign. After analyzing Bergenheimīs career it is easy to come to the conclusion that his playoff performance was a fluke that brought him a great new contract.

    Fantasy outlook:

Bergenheim will fight with Kopecky to play on the third scoring line and this battle might go back and forth throughout the season with no clear winner. Usually, this type of situation is not a good sign for fantasy purposes. Another thing you should be aware of is that the guy is injury prone and more than 65 games would be too much to expect.
Giving those circumstances he will at the best repeat his last season and finish with around 30 points. You should better expect a small drop-off to around 25 points but with, tons and tons of shots. 170 shots shouldnīt be out of reach.

Bergenheim has a small chance of being a sleeper if his shot accuracy goes up and he can stay healthy. He could finally turn the corner but the chance for that is indeed a small one.

Feel free to take a gamble very late and cheap otherwise stay away.

So the new guys are all done. What would you love to hear about next besides camp news?

    Short rumbelings:

    - Corey Stillman joins Panthers front office
    - Marc Cheverie traded to PHX for Justin Bernhardt( http://www.hockeysfuture.com/prospects/justin_bernhardt)

DonÂīt like this move Cheverie was solid, but oh well Brian Foster looks like he might suprise, there is always a reason behind a trade.

    - From what iÂīve read and heard from camp so far the three players showing themselves in best shape are Keaton Ellerby, Evgeni Dadonov and Jack Skille.

great stuff so far KTL. i was wondering what your thoughts are on Repik. I drafted him late in an extremely deep league as kind of a wild card player. I am considering dropping him for a prospect im starting to read more and more about. Do you think he ever makes the team. He has had some decent years in the AHL but i feel that he maybe one of those guys that never gets a good look and when he does he doesnt perform. he has a lot of pressure on him right now with all the prospects FLA has been stockpiling. thoughts????

Thanks for the warm words. I had already answered your thread in the prospects part of the forum before i saw that you posted here.

Repiks time as a top prospect in the organisation is over. He might have a bigger chance of callups than some others, if he misses the team but guys like Wilson or Howden have moved in front of him. On a the prospects voting in the Florida fanbase he came in #11.

Depending on where you drafted him he might still be worth a gamble he has some talent but he canÂīt utalize it so far. He seemed like he didnÂīt belong, when he was on the ice in the NHL last season. IÂīm not sure what happend there cause the season before he had some decent stints.

Overall you shouldnÂīt count on him better try to trade him while you can get something.

Will keep you up to date what happens in the prospect camp and if he is maybe surprising.

Short overview about the prospects game vs. Tampa:

    - Panthers won 4:2, but it was men vs. boys. Timmins, Huberdeau, McFarland and Durocher scored for the PÂīs.

    - expected standouts were Markstrom, Huberdeau and Gudbranson ( who had a fight)

    - suprising standouts were Vincent Trochek and Jonathan Hazen ( who looked awesome according to a ton of spectators)

    - Howden had a very quite night and Alex Petrovic had a tough one with a lot of mistakes.

Analyzis on the Shawn Matthias signing coming soon.

    The last signing

Shawn Matthias resigned a few days ago. Yes the Panthers finally locked up their "golden boy" at least after what Dobber thinks of the guy. The big hurdle for the signing all the time was the fact that Shawn wanted a one-way and the Panthers a two-way contract. They found a solution in making a two- year contract with the first year now is two-way and the second year a one-way contract.
But all the time while this signing was in jeopardy, you didnīt hear any voices of fear out of the Panthers fanbase about losing Matthias. Is Shawn just that loyal to Florida that they were sure that he would resign or has he lost his unique status in the organization?

Matthias, the prototype of a power forward, was penciled for a huge breakout last season with all the lack of skill in the Panthers lineup and all opportunity for him to take over.
But he only posted 16 points in 51 games, while being juggled from the first line center spot to the 4th line center role. Most of the time he was on the 3rd line with random linemates. So is he to blame for the lack of great production? Yes and no, the moment Shawn clicked with someone most of the time he got inserted somewhere else in the lineup the next day. On the other hand, he just didnīt have any phenomenal games.

Letīs get this straight with quoting a Cats fan on another message board: "Wasnīt Matthias Red Wings prospect? When did they ever trade a good one? Yes they never did, so get your exceptions down on Matthias!"

    Fantasy outlook:

The days of Matthias as a potential top-six forward are officially over. He will need to fight hard to get a spot on the team against the likes of Ryan Carter and Tim Kennedy. Ultimately he should be still more talented than those two and make it, but itīs not an impossibility that Dineen decides that the others are more fitting a fourth line center mold than Matthias. Matthias could very well be trade bait pretty soon or if not he should only be counted on as a fourth-liner. If he can stay healthy you can expect around 25 points than, but better not count on him.
Advice for fantasy leagues would be: Sell him while you can!
Only take a gamble on his left over potential, if its basically free!

Panthers prospects lost 3-1 vs. Nashville. Huberdeau with the lone goal.

Markstrom was by far the best player out there. Rest of the team didnÂīt look good especially Petrovic and Howden with disappointing nights again.

Panthers win 4:1 vs TB again.

Hazen, McFarland, Comrie and Birkholz with the goals.

Brian Foster was in goal and played decent.

Petrovic a little better than the last two nights.

Comrie and Robak looked like solid callups.

McFarland had a nice game and Hazen continues to impress but is likely a few years away.

Markstrom Guds and Huberdeau all didnÂīt play.

    First impressions from camp

For us fantasy hockey fans it is now the most exciting time of the year itīs camp time. We get to see some early glances at what is coming next season. Who are the surprising names out there? Who might loses their spot? Sometimes itīs only a preview of a youngster that is still a season away, sometimes itīs a vet struggling that forecasts for a “meh“-season.

In Sunrise itīs Day 3 of the camp, two scrimmage games and double-header vs. Nashville last night went by.
The Panthers lost game one vs. Nashville 5-3 and won game two 4-3. The results are exactly what were expected since Nashville played a better lineup in Game One and the Panthers played theirs in Game Two.

    Who is looking good?

    Dmitry Kulikov:

Without a single doubt the best player on ice in both games was Dmitry Kulikov. Seems like he heard the interview with Santos saying his spot isnīt guaranteed. He had a goal in Game One and made an impressive pairing with Alex Petrovic.

    Jonathan Huberdeau:

Oh my gosh if he continues his play it will be brutally tough to cut they guy. It was just a scrimmage and one game versus a lot of minor leaguers and it was stated multiple times that they would not rush him. However so far owners could be cautiously optimistic that he can make it this very season. He was by far the best offensive player out for the Panthers, scoring a goal versus Nashville, setting up a lot of nice plays and basically scoring second goal (Santorelliīs goal was all Hubs).

    Jonathan Hazen:

So far the surprise of camp. He has soft hands and had great shifts in the rookie games, scrimmage and the Game Two versus Nashville.

    Brian Campbell:

Soupy was awesome so far, the best quarterback the Panthers had in a long time but that was expected playing versus a mixed up competition.

    Nolan Yonkman:

Big big guy that hit tons so far. Made the impression he can easily be a serviceable call-up.

    John McFarland:

McFarland showed that he wants to compete in the rookie games and scored there. From what iīve heard he looks a like at worst a 3rd liner in the NHL one day. Great speed good hands and his work ethic, which was always questionable, seems like he stepped it up big time. ( Meanwhile McFarland was cut somehow unexpected to the followers)

    Tim Kennedy:

Was called the best player on ice in Game Two from several sources, he threw his weight around and scored the game winner.

    Jack Skille:

Itīs all from his speed that created trouble in the Nashville zone every time he was on ice. Looks like he wants to fight for his spot.

    Angelo Esposito:

Another bright spot. Angelo still looks slow but his vision is out of this world. Made two fantastic plays, which made the crowd go nuts.

    The disappointing acts:

    Michael Repik:

Played bored and seems like he doesnīt care.

    Scott Clemmenson:

Let in two softies. You heard the crowd screaming for King Markstrom the whole game.

    Shawn Matthias:
If you saw him yesterday you might be the only one, but the box scores prove that he played.

    David Booth:

Didnīt look all that good was hit pretty hard and forced shots from bad spots the whole night.

Which decisions are still to be made?

    - The captain question is still unanswered.
    - The last spot in the top 6 is still up for grabs.
    - Whole fourth line spots are still to be won.

Suprise cuts so far: McFarland and Garret Wilson.

On a side note Alex Petrovic was sent down, a little unexpected to me but he had some not so good shifts.

Not a funny game for the Panthers. It was men vs. boys with the completly uneven lineups vs. TB. The Lightning won 5-2 after going 4-0 last night.

Repik and Skille scored for the Panthers.

Markstrom looked shaky but was left alone on 3 of the 5 goals. Rough rough night. Observers stated he needs that one more season in the AHL.

The bright spots were Jack Skille and Shawn Matthias who were fighting for their roster spot. Both played pretty well.

Best two players on ice for the Panthers were Marcel Goc and Huberdeau, who was by far the most dangerous guy out there.

Panthers cut Mark Cullen, Roman Derlyuk, Angelo Esposito, Jonathan Hazen, Keith Seabrook, Eric Selleck, Tyson Strachan, Scott Timmins and Nolan Yonkman.

A little busy at the moment but wanted to give you a short coverage.

The Panthers lost the second game to the TBL 5-3. Goals were scored by Kopecky, Kennedy and Versteeg.

Tampa outclassed the Panthers once again.

    The bright spots:

Kopecky: He played like a man on a mission really effective and was aggressive the whole game.

Kennedy: He seems to the be suprise this offseason he shows that he belongs at the moment. He really clicked great with Booth and Kopecky. Currently its his spot to lose.

Ellerby: Oh man, he had not one bad shift so far. He matured a lot and is riper than last season. The long and steady development approach maybe was the right way to get his talents in the NHL.

Skille: See Kennedy itÂīs his spot to lose. He trys hard and gets thing done.

Santorelli-Dadonov combo: Clicks again. Was the best line out the once again.

Versteeg: Showed in small spurts his nose for the net.

    The ugly:

Theodore: Was crappy. Nothing else to be added. Flat out crappy.

Gudbranson: Looks not too focused at the moment, he might think his spot is a safe one but itÂīs not.

Huberderau: Was invisible in this game. But oh well itÂīs just one game.

Reinprecht: Will not make this team. Simply too many better guys out there. He looks lost.

Matthias: Not that he isnÂīt trying but Skille and Kennedy are ahead right now.
