    Default 3rd Goalie

I'm in a new 12 team head to head dynasty league and we are draftingright now. I currently have Hiller and MAF as my goalies and the league I'm in has 8 offensive categories and 5 goalie categories, Wins, GAA, sv%, Svs, and SO.

It's the 12th round and I'm debating taking a 3rd goalie in case Hiller has a shaky season. I was planning on taking Rask in a couple rounds but he was recently drafted. Roloson, Bernier, Rask and Varlamov have gone in the last round and a half. 3 teams have 3 goalies and one team only has one.

Now that I got the background information out of the way I think I want to draft Pavelec, one of the few goalie options remaining. First, do you think he is a good choice? Other notable goalies remaining are Brodeur, Elliot, and Dubnyk.

If I don't take him I'd be choosing between Berglund, Zajac, Ennis, or Okposo.

Thoughts? Thanks in advance. NOTE: team in sig is not the team in this post

With an 8/5 split, I want Pavelec here. You could most likely trade him for more than that later on anyway.

    Draft a goalie for sure.
In my 12 team H2H pool last season (with similar stat categories), the teams that finished 1st, 2nd, and 3rd, all had three starting goaltenders.

If you feel you could win this season, take Brodeur.
If you want a better keeper option, take Pavelec.

With the goalie cats weighted so heavily, I think you need to go with a goalie for sure. Pavelac is the best keeper option. Tough to pass on Okposo though. If he is still around at your next pick snag him for sure.

Brodeur is probably your best option for winning now, but don't expect him to return to elite form

I wouldn't be so quick to draft Pavelec here - the numbers aren't adding up for one thing. Sounds like there are 26 goalies drafted and 2 of them are backups at this point, so 6 starters are still out there - you named 2. Is Schneider still out there?

I would like to know all the options but I am guessing that you can stretch the goalie grab for one more round.

This is a tough question to answer without knowing two things about your league (a) how many goalies do you start per week, and (b) how many keepers do you keep (i.e., can you keep 3 goalies at the end of the year?).

In general, with the heavily weighted goalie categories, I would go with a goalie too. Pavelec seems like the right choice, but if you can only keep 2 goalies end of the year and if you have a chance to win it all this year, I might go Brodeur. Keep in mind that MAF and Hiller is a killer combo with those stats, MAF will dominate on the Ws and saves side, Hiller will give very solid GAA, SV%, Svs and shutouts. Yes there is a risk with Hiller but everything seems to be going well with his comeback, so knock on wood but I think the worst fears are not going to come to pass.

However, if you only start 2 goalies a week and so the 3rd goalie is just insurance, I might go with Berglund or Ennis. It depends in part on the categories and the makeup of the rest of your team. I say this because there are only 12 teams, so even if one of your goalies goes down chances are there will be some reasonable replacement on the waiver (a backup on a good team, if not a starter). But if you want to cut out that risk entirely, go with the goalie.

I just looked on the "same night tool"..

Your least amount of conflicting games would be Calgary (16) St. Louis (17) and Carolina (18). I'll assume all those starters are gone but Winnipeg has 23 conflicting games.

Without being able to land another starter, on a team with less conflicting games so you can actually use all three, I would be targeting Schnieder or Bernier. Probably Bernier first as the Kings schedule conflicts the least with Pittsburg or Anaheim.

Thanks everyone for your help. First time posting a new thread so if I left out some information that would have been helpful I'm sorry. I ended up taking Pavelec. Schneider had already been picked, there are a minimum of 3 goalie starts per week, and it's a dynasty league so I will be keeping ALL players. And from the 4 skaters I was deciding between all but Berglund lasted until my next pick. Thanks again!

i think you made the right call. Pavelec had a tear last year that was amazing so he has shown potential.

I am shocked that this being a dynasty league that Pavelec was still available that late.

With stats so heavily weighted on goalies, having 3 starting tenders will be gold. That alone can put you in the top half of the standings. We had a guy in our pool who went from 10th place (out of 12) to 1st at the end of the regular season (lost in playoffs) and the biggest difference between the years was adding a 3rd starting tender in the offseason.

tenders will be gold in your league, dont trade any of the three this year unless you can upgrade one of them. Its much easier to replace offensive guys than to acquire a consistent starting Tender. All three of yours also dont have any competition coming through the ranks.
