Im currently working on a write up for Backes. I plan to preview the upcoming season and give my personal take on projections and where each player fits in the top 6.

    Default Blues Fantasy Outlook 2011/2012

St Louis Blues Fantasy Outlook 2011/2012

This is shaping up to be a great preview into the future of this organization. The blues have been stockpiling talent over the last few years of shrewd drafting by John Davidson and his scouting staff. This season should show us which players are going to become legit fantasy options and which players may never get consistent top six minutes. With a lot of quality prospects coming up through the pipelines there is a small window of opportunity left for some of these players to secure their spots in the top six.

Projected Lines for the 2011/2012 Season

    LW C RW
    McDonald Backes Stewart
    D’Agostini Berglund Oshie
    Steen Arnott Langenbrunner
    Sobotka Nichol Crombeen

    D
    Colaiacovo Pietrangelo
    Jackman Shattenkirk
    Polak Nikitin

    G
    Halak
    Elliott

Up front the Blues have good depth on their forward lines in case of injuries. If David Perron remains out for this season their will be a battle on the second line. Currently they have four different options they could try out on that line. D’Agostini had success during the end of the season with Berglund and Oshie. He should get the opportunity to regain his spot in the top six. Steen, Langenbrunner and even Sobotka could be pushing hard for some quality ice time. Steen has shown glimpses of ability to produce when given the chance. Last year he recorded 51 points which could help his case of being considered a top six forward. This group of forwards has had their fair share of injuries of the past few seasons and need to have a season off the injury reserve if the Blues want to make the long jump up the standings.

On the back end the Blues look to have a good mix of offensive punch along with good defensive defensemen. Shattenkirk and Pietrangelo should continue to man the points on the PP and provide offence. Colaiacovo has shown he can produce when in the lineup, but his biggest challenge remains his injury concerns. He has never played more then 70 games a year and looks to be a lifelong band aid boy. He could be a legit 40 point option if he could ever play a full season.

In goal Halak looks to have the top job locked up. He came out of the gates last year playing like the previous years playoffs. He was beginning to look like he could become a top tier fantasy option until he ran into a stint of injuries. If Halak can stay healthy for the year he should see around 60 starts and could possibly break the 30 win mark.

    Newcomers and Possible Impact

Jason Arnott- He looks to be on the last leg of his career. He has been brought in for more of a vetern presence and help with the penalty kill. Arnott in most formats should have little to no value, unless it is a fairly deep league that counts extended stats.

Jamie Langenbrunner- Here is another veteran that is in a similar situation to Arnott. Langenbrunner could slide into the top six with either a taste of power play time or a regular shift in the top six when injuries mount. Langenbrunner could be a decent waiver wire pickup if injuries amount.

Scott Nichol- Yet another depth pickup to help with the penalty kills and face off department. Unless you are in need desperate need of help in the face off category this player shouldn’t cross your mind on most days.

Brian Elliott- He is trying to get his career back on track after an abysmal year in the Mile High City. After having a fairly successful season in Ottawa with 29 wins, his career got side tracked last year. At this point it’s looking as if he has a long road back to starter eligibility but a solid year as a back up could mean a lot for his career. Look for around 10 wins and limited chances to get consecutive starts barring injuries.

great write-up db87. however, i think the blues will continue to roll with a macdonald/backes combo and a stewart/berglund combo. berglund and stewart were inseparable down the stretch and the blues liked having a big body on each of their top 2 lines. the wingers for these two pairings is where things could get interesting and change throughout the year.

Agree with the Stewart-Bergy combo. Would love to see Oshie in there too and build around this deadly line.

    Default Forcasting the Blues 2011/2012

    Forecasting the Blues 2011/2012

    David Backes – Prediction-78 games played/36 goals/32 assists/120 PIM

Backes is a guy who has been progressing nicely since he first broke into the league in 2006. Since 2006 Backes has had 23, 31, 54, 48 and 62 points in each season. Nearly every year his stats have trended upwards while staying relatively healthy his entire career. At only 27 years of age I expect Backes to continue on his upward climb and slowly inch closer to the 70 point plateau. The blues are getting better each and every year and Backes is no different. Expect slightly higher numbers then his last year’s stats.

    Chris Stewart – Prediction-70 games played/34 goals/30 assists/60 PIM

Stewart was relied on heavily to contribute in the Blues offence last year. He put up nearly point per game numbers after relocating to St. Louis. His numbers should be very close to those of Backes. Both players will be counted on for helping turn the Blues around. Stewart is still getting used to the rigorous ways of the everyday NHL life. At such a young age expect to experience some growing pains with this player. He is a cant miss gem in any format. If you missed out on him try and get your hands on this kid. It’s only uphill from here and he could very well break 75pts in the next three years.

    Patrick Berglund – Prediction-80 games played/25 goals/35 assists/18 PIM

Berglund is one of my personal favorites for a break out candidate. He is entering his magical fourth season after producing impressive numbers last year. Berglund formed undeniably great chemistry with Stewart at the end of last year. Look for things to continue to roll with this young line. Berglund should start to show us why he is so coveted in nearly every fantasy league. He only has a couple more years left before his price sky rockets the same way it has for fellow teammates Backes and Stewart.

    T.J. Oshie – Prediction-65 games played/17 goals/37 assists/25 PIM

Oshie is a player who can be frustrating to own on a fantasy team, but yet very rewarding. Oshie can have a higher perceived value because usually every night he plays he ends up in the highlights of the night. Whether it is a bone crushing hit or a game changing goal Oshie has a knack for being a game breaker. His biggest concern will always be whether or not he can play an entire season. If Oshie stays healthy he should have a big year and continue to improve on his previous years totals. If your league counts hits and face offs, Oshie could prove to have a huge impact for your team as a depth player. Just don’t expect 82 games out of him just yet.

    Alexander Steen – Prediction-71 games played/23 goals/25 assists/36 PIM

Steen should continue to be a solid depth pick up for any fantasy team. With his ability to play all three different forward positions he continues to be a viable depth option. When given the opportunity Steen has showed he can step up when it matters. The blues have had injury troubles the last couple of years so look for Steen once again to help fill in the void when the situation arises.

    Andy McDonald – Prediction-60 games played/21 goals/23 assists/24 PIM

The aging veteran is still proving that he can score at a very decent rate for his age. McDonald is on the wrong side of 30 but he still skates like he is in his late 20’s. The toughest challenge for McDonald as well is going to try and stay healthy. In the last seven years McDonald has played over 60 games only three times. This could help some GM’s potentially give up on McDonald for relatively cheap right before a playoff push.

    Alex Pietrangelo – Prediction-78 games played/ 8 goals/28 assists/26 PIM

Pietrangelo busted onto the scene last year and did exactly what everyone expected him to do when he was drafted fourth overall in 2008. I expect Pietrangelo to experience some growing pains in his sophomore season. Both he and Shattenkirk are right handed shots so the blues could opt to go with an extra forward on the left point and split time between the two on the main power play unit. He should still post respectable numbers in his second full season but I don’t expect him to fully break out just quite yet.

    Kevin Shattenkirk - Prediction- 80 games played/7 goals/29 assists/40 PIM

I expect Shattenkirk to experience the same difficulties as Pietrangelo in his second full season. In by no means do I expect a bad year from either of them but I feel they will struggle to eclipse the high standard they set last year. Shattenkirk should develop more into a reliable NHL defenseman rather then a strictly offensive guy. I feel as the season progresses Shattenkirk will really come into a mold and start showing us why he is quickly becoming a top option on the back end.

    Matt D’Agostini - Prediction- 82 games played/20 goals/22 assists/50 PIM

D’Agostini’s year is going to reflect how much man games are missed by the other members of the top six. I feel for the first few months of the start of the season the blues could be juggling as many as 3-4 players in and out of their top six. D’Agostini has showed that he can produce with the big boys, but it will be a big test to see if he can do it on a regular basis. He projects as a great waiver wire pick up in most medium sized leagues and should be looked at if and when the Blues run into injury troubles.

    Default Traverse City Wrap Up

After starting the tournament on a bad note, the Blues finished the tournament with a respectable 3-1 record. The blues could of even had more success if their 2 top prospects Scharwtz and Tarasenko had attended.

Phillip McRae lead all Blues scorers in points with seven in four games. McRae is listed at 6'2 and if he can carry this momentum into training camp he might be able to crack a spot in the top 9. With Perron still battling concussion issues there may be a spot on the 2nd. With this tournament McRae can now look to not only make the Blues but be used in a scoring role.

Jake Allen had an atrocious first game allowing 5 goals but bounced back nicely in his nice 2 starts. Allen ended up with a 920 SV% and 2.97 GAA. He should spend the entire year in Peoria. He could get a chance with the big club as early as late this year, but more likely next year.

Jordan Binnington had a solid game against a fairly strong Carolina squad. He should give Allen some healthy competition in a few years and looks to be a steal in last years draft

Default Tampa Bay VS St Louis

Tonight is the first pre season game for the blues. The lineup for the blues is as follows

    TONIGHT'S LINEUP
    1 - Brian Elliot
    15 - Jamie Langenbrunner
    18 - Jonathan Cheechoo
    22 - Kevin Shattenkirk
    26 - B.J. Crombeen
    28 - Carlo Colaiacovo
    32 - Chris Porter
    34 - Jake Allen
    36 - Matt D'Agostini
    37 - Derek Nesbitt
    39 - Philip McRae
    42 - David Backes
    46- Roman Polak
    54 - Anthony Nigro
    55 - Danny Syvret
    56 - Brett Ponich
    59 - Anthony Peluso
    63 - Mark Cundari
    76 - Brett Sonne
    78 - Evegeny Grachev

Brian Elliot will get the start. There's a lot of names that will be interesting to see where they fit in on the roster. Jake Allen will be one to watch after a fairly strong rookie camp. McRae lead all blues scorers in the rookie tourney and with a strong preseason and main camp could secure a top 9 role. Also this could be one of Grachev's last few kicks at the can so it will be interesting to see how he performs. If he has a solid camp we might see some more life in the kid but if he falters and stuggles this year he might see his chance slowly fade away.

Great news for David Perron and the Blues today.

ST. LOUIS – St. Louis Blues Executive Vice President and General Manager Doug Armstrong announced Sunday that injured forward David Perron will rejoin the team on Monday.

Perron has been suffering from post-concussion syndrome after being injured on November 4, 2010 vs. San Jose.

Perron, 23, has missed 72 consecutive games and had seven points (5g, 2a) in 10 games prior to the injury.

Visit stlouisblues.com on Monday afternoon for more details, including video interviews with Armstrong and Perron.

Doesn't mean that he's healthy yet, but it definitely means that he's on track.

Put this in the Injury Discussions room, but thought it might get more traffic here

Update on Perron from today's presser

Perron has been skating lightly for the last four weeks and has felt well enough to return to St. Louis to begin training. He will still need to pass an NHL baseline test in the next week before consulting with Blues trainer Ray Barile. After that, he’ll continue working off the ice and gradually work towards getting back to practicing with his teammates.

No timetable has been set for any of that. Perron will get back at his own pace, but returning to St. Louis is a big positive first step.

Good to hear that he's been skating...likely will take awhile for him to get back on the ice.

The story of the Blues pre season so far IMO has been Grachev. Many people, myself included were starting to write this kid of as a bust. I feel that he has a greater chance of succeeding in St Louis rather than New York. I still feel that he will start the year in the AHL but the Blues have a lot of band aid boys which could open up a spot in the top six for him later in the year.

notable recent cuts for the Blues were

    Cheechoo, Hensick and Allen.
