Youth Movement (slight chuckle, but serious... it's true!)

So did anyone notice that the Flames dressed 4 youngsters in their lineup last night, scored 5 goals (on the Habs, but still) and won an important game? Draft picks Brodie (love this guy... more on him later), Nemisz, Bouma, traded prospect Horak and Desbiens all played, plus our other diamond-in-the-rough Derek Smith. Now I realize some of these guys are up due to the injuries with Backlund and Cammy, but still it's at least somewhat refreshing to talk about a Flames team with a few youngsters. Of course, it would be nice to talk about top-tier prospects racing up the depth charts... time will tell this off-season if the play of these youngsters translates into anything good regarding trades or acquiring more picks.

And for a note that may only interest me... the Flames can't get Babchuk back in the lineup. How many teams would pay even a small pick for a PP spe******t with a 104 mph slapshot? Maybe we'll find out in June, because his slapshot is useless if it's only going to break someone's foot in practice.

Can this team pull off the unthinkable??? Or are we just set up to be teased once again?

LOL ya thats a pretty sick youth movement in Calgary. I dont see how this team can even think about pulling off a playoff spot. They just about blew another game to a lottery team. There is to many teams with them battling that are much better... Eg San Jose, LA even the Avs. Personally I think this team has to start rebuilding. Kipper and Iggy are getting up there. Why not trade Kipper while he still has value and use Iggy to mentor the young guys. You could get a huge youth package for Kipper.

The problem is if you trade kipper you are planning to suck big time next year. Irving is good but he is not ready to carry the load and losing every week doesn't make for a good learning experience for young players entering the league.

Keep Kipper, make Irving back up next year with a decent split of games. The youngsters have chance to win some games and Irivng gets more NHL experience without getting blown out every night.

    Flames re-sign Irving to a one-year, two-way deal:

    http://flames.nhl.com/club/news.htm?...id=DL|CGY|home

CALGARY, AB -- The Calgary Flames announced today they have signed goaltender Leland Irving.

“Leland made some great strides last season in attempting to establish himself as being ready to carry the load as the back-up goaltender in Calgary,” said Flames General Manager Jay Feaster. “At the same time, in order for us to have the success we want as a team, it will be necessary for our back-up goalie not merely to start 20-plus games but also to win more than half those starts. We are pleased to have Leland under contract for the upcoming season and look forward to what should be a hard-fought and spirited battle in training camp between Leland and Henrik Karlsson.”

Irving, a native of Swan Hills, Alberta, played seven NHL games last season and registered his first career win on December 23rd in a 3-1 win in Vancouver. He had a .912% save percentage and a 3.20 goals against average with a 1-3-3 record. Six of his seven starts were in the second game of back-to-back games.

    Contract Terms: One-year, two-way contract with an AAV of $687,500 / $207,500.

    Around where, though?

Think he stays? Personally, I think he is done in Calgary if they miss the playoffs. If it is really obvious that they are out, I could see him moved at the deadline.

Jay Feaster is pretty adamant that Iginla will remain a Calgary Flame until the day he retires. The only way Iginla gets moved is if the Flames go into rebuild mode and we all know that the Flames dont like to do that.

    Too true re Feaster

Though, Iggy always seems to slide in that he'd like to stay IF they had a competitive team. I get the sense that he may not be as on board with Feaster as Feaster may like to believe. Pure speculation on my part, but I think he is going to try to go for a cup and everyone (including him) knows that barring a miracle, the Flames are not that team. He'll see how things play out, but if they are out of it, as they likely will be, I could see him asking to be set free.

As a selfish Iggy owner, I have to say I wouldn't mind seeing the Flames fall out of it so that Iggy moves on to somewhere like Pitts.

Does Iggy really want a Stanley Cup Ring? That is the question. If he is happy with how his career has turned out so far then he will remain a Flame for life.

It seems everyone wants Iggy to land in Pittsburgh lol.

    big opportunity for backlund.

if he dosn't make something happen, he probably won't get another shot with linemates like this again.
