Jokinen just hit the wire, and could make an interesting pickup if he plays on the top line. What's the word? Think he has more than 50 points in him this year?

mentioned in another thread that the flames see moss as a future top-2 centre on the team instead of as a winger. looks like with the injuries the flames are dealing with, he will take on that role to begin the season. moss will centre tanguay an iginla starting saturday night...

as per radio interview with feaster earlier today.

This looks like as good a confirmation as we'll get until we see #12 on the ice later tonight. There really doesn't seem to be any red flags against him playing.

    http://www.calgaryherald.com/sports/...493/story.html

    Game #1 - Pittsburgh(1-0-0) vs. Calgary (0-0-0)

    Notes:
    • First NHL game for Roman Horak, the player acquired in the Tim Erixon trade (along with two 2nd round picks)
    • Bourque playing on the 3rd line (w Horak and Hagman), not exactly the way to respond to an inconsistent 2010-11 season. Stempniak takes the 2nd line RW spot for now with Jokinen and Glencross
    • Stajan on the 4th line, without Morrison or Backlund... what is his future? We will find out within the next 10 games I'm certain.
    • David Moss moves to play 1st line C between Tanguay/Iginla. He's had some experience with this last year and was finally finding some consistency over the last part of the year. He's a big body who can stay in front of the net and compete physically against Malkin or Staal. He'll need to stay healthy to finally fulfill a possible breakout season at 28 years of age.
    • Preseason PP had Giordano on right point with Babchuk on left point (RH shot). Let's hope this continues.

    Slightly interesting PP combos:

    PP#1 - Giordano/Tanguay, Iginla/Moss/Stempniak

    PP#2 - Bouwmeester/Babchuk, Glencross/Jokinen/Bourque

Good pressure so far. Hagman taking it hard to the net as well.

Babchuk scratched 3 of the last 4 games... anybody got some insight as to what's going on? He was a pretty big part of the Flames PP down the stretch last year, so to go from that to healthy scratch is pretty shocking. What's the deal?

    Found this about Babchuk:

"Anton Babchuk has already been scratched twice in favour of newcomer Derek Smith. Perhaps not what would be expected from a defender drawing a $2.5-million salary. So how does Babchuk ensure his spot in the lineup?

"Play better," replied Sutter. "His game has been somewhat inconsistent. There's a structure we want to play ... and he's got to play within that. We're not looking for a guy to just be a power-play spec-ialist. You need six (defencemen) to play big minutes. It's a situation where his overall game has to be get better for us.""

Good job horrorfan, thanks for the update!! I'm now back with a bit more regularity.

Here's a few of the latest posts that may be of use to you Flames fans:

Quick analysis of the Erixon-to-Rangers trade (all 5 players involved) You'll notice the Flames players are definitely praised in the article:

Projected lines for tonight's game vs NYR
    http://flames.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=596667

It appears Karlsson will be getting his second start tonight... a HOME start which has been very rare for any backup goalie in the Kipper era until Karlsson arrived. Good to see the confidence in him. Pre-game skate was optional so no confirmation if Derek Smith or Babchuk is dressing as the #6 D tonight.

While on the Flames site, watch the video called "Speed and Power" which talks about the success of the 2nd line of Jokinen/Glencross/Stempniak. Interesting to see Bourque still pushed down to the 3rd line due to Stempniak's chemistry on that line.

Was at the game yesterday, a rare afternoon game in Calgary that unfortunately was affected by the loss of their game time nap. A bad game for Calgary on many levels, even if they were completely snakebitten to score against Rinne it went to show that this team's new sales gimmick, "Every Game Matters" is severely being tested with the rough start. At the very least it got my 5 year old son away from cheering for Boston and start playing the Flames on NHL11 again. Plus I finally got my Sakic autographed jersey at silent auction from the game!!

Yes, as you can see I was not a big fan of the game itself........

Lines were changed at the start of the game. Hagman (as you've seen from my previous expectations) was a healthy scratch.

    Morrison/Tanguay/Iginla
    Jokinen/Glencross/Stempniak
    Stajan/Moss/Bourque
    Horak/Jackman/Kostopoulus

    Giordano/Hannan
    Bouwmeester/Butler
    Sarich/Smith

    Again, Babchuk a healthy scratch.

At the start the Flames really came out on fire, their offense dominated time of possession and all 3 offensive lines had their way with the Nashville D. Their 3rd line D of Laakso and Hillen rarely saw the ice. However the story of the Flames these last few years resurfaced where a timely snipe was not forthcoming. Passes coming from the corner on the cycle bounced over sticks in the slot with regularity, and any decent shots were gloved down by Rinne incredibly easily.

The PP was changed again... not a good sign this early in the season. Giordano and Tanguay on the point with Morrison/Iggy/Bourque. PP2 had Bouwmeester and Derek Smith (impressive he's getting PP time over Butler during Babchuk's time off) along with the 2nd line group of Jokinen/Glencross/Stempniak. Again they were able to keep pressure on, but one thing that was troubling was the defensive assignments on the PP. Too many times either the puck was fumbled or missed on passes back to the point, or out of position stopping clearing attempts that should have been stopped.

The first goal was a classic Nashville rope-a-dope goal, Nashville's 4th line scored a dirty goal off a Hillen deflected shot in front of Kipper that hits Bergfors in the chest beside the net and bounces in. So no, Bergfors is not back...

The remainder of the game continued with more Flames chances and more fantastic saves by Rinne and one by Kevin Klein on a wide-open net. Unfortunately it was just not meant to be, as the Preds makeshift #1 line of S Kostitsyn/Craig Smith/Halischuk (yup, the best Nashville line last night by far) scored a 2-on-1 goal when Bouwmeester slid and could not break up the pass across. 2-0 Nashville, game over Flames.

    Positives:
    - Kipper looked good, square to the shooters and no real rebound issues
    - Bourque played a pretty good game as well, good positionally and was getting open with that newly formed 3rd line, and was rewarded with 1st PP time.

    Negatives:
    - all the D looked quiet, a very quiet game from Giordano which surprised me. Would like to see Babchuk brought in for Butler one game to see if he can get things working with J-Bo.
    - hitting was virtually non-existent. Flames aren't gonna win pretty games. After the 1st goal Nashville went to a 1-2-2 that the Flames just couldn't get through either
    - Rinne is a bonafide Vezina trophy candidate, great positioning and calm reflexes throughout
    - Horak was very quiet. You can see the hockey sense but he's not really making a difference right now. Would rather see him dominating not just picking up a few 4th line shifts.

Just thought I'd point out how well Bartschi is doing this year - he has 5 goals and 17 points in 8 games. FWIW, stats-wise he's been the best draftee returned to Juniors aside from Hamilton and Saad.
