OHL Weekly Ramblings - April 19th

OHL Player of the Week - Darren Archibald

Darren Archibald notched 4 goals, 2 assists and was plus-five in three games this past week to give the IceDogs forward the honour of being named the OHL Player of the Week

OHL's Most Sportsmanlike Player - Jason Akeson

Akeson made recent OHL history today as he was the first OHLer to win four regular season awards (Top Scorer, Top RW, Overage, Sportsman). Impressive!

The Ontario Hockey League today announced that Jason Akeson of the Kitchener Rangers is the 2010-11 recipient of the William Hanley Trophy awarded to the OHL’s Most Sportsmanlike Player. Akeson registered only 23 minutes in penalties and tied for the OHL scoring leader with 108 points.

Soo Greyhounds go Young with New GM

Kyle Dubas (25) has been named the new General Manager of the Sault Saint Marie Greyhounds. Personally, I admire how the Greyhounds organization decided to go with the right candidate for the GM opening. At least, it gives us fantasy GMs some hope that maybe we will land a hockey general managers' job with no or little experience.

    OHL PLAYOFFS

    WESTERN CONFERENCE

The Windsor Spitfires have made modern day history after winning their 10th straight playoff game (see Patrick Kings' article below).

The Spitfires beat the Saginaw Spirit 5-0 on Sunday with a hat trick from Zack Kassian (BUF) and a shutout from Jack Campbell (DAL) to advance to the Western Conference Championship.

    Playoff Roundup: Spitfires Win Series

Sportsnet's Patrick King: Spitfires' dynasty continues

The Owen Sound have been patiently awaiting the winner of the Windsor-Saginaw series after sweeping the Plymouth Whalers in four straight games. The Attack will now face off against the Windsor Spitfires, who weren't expected to be in this position after their Head Coach and their leading scorer (Taylor Hall) both bolted for the NHL. The Spitfires are rolling and will make some noise in this Western Conference Final.

WEST PREVIEW: Owen Sound Attack (1) vs. Windsor Spitfires (4)
Full Schedule can be found here

    Season Series: Attack 3-1

Fun Stat: The Spitfires' season record looks poor versus the Attack but in three of the four games, the games were decided by just one goal.

    DY's Prediction: Spitfires in 7

    EASTERN CONFERENCE

The Oshawa Generals were defeated by the Niagara IceDogs in game five and were eliminated from post-season action.

The Mississauga St.Mike's Majors continue to roll through teams as they swept the Sudbury Wolves and remain undefeated in the 2011 playoffs.

The Majors and IceDogs are two of the OHL's top teams and deserve to represent the Eastern Conference in the upcoming Championship series.

EAST PREVIEW: Mississauga St. Michael's Majors (1) vs. Niagara IceDogs (3)

    Preview and Schedule here

    Season Series: Majors 7-1

Fun Stat: The Majors'-IceDogs' series will be swarming with NHL scouts as there are 14 eligible players for the 2011 NHL Entry Draft playing in this series. Get your tickets!

Look for this series to feature stellar play from the netminders. Majors JP Anderson has a 8-0-0-0 record with a shiny 1.74 GAA and .921 SV%. IceDogs' Mark Visentin sports a 8-1-0-0 record with a 1.89 GAA and 0.947 SV%

Just terrible scheduling for the Attack series (well for me). I can't make any of the games in Owen Sound except for game 7. Here's hoping the series goes the distance..

Man if that draft was right and Guelph came out with Horvat, I would literally be jumping for joy.

Yep. I am sure the Guelph Storm would be thrilled however I can't see the London Knights passing on Bo Horvat. His family ties to the St. Thomas team (currently playing for them) and the London Knights is just too damn sttrong for the Knights to pass on Horvat. Plus, I heard that his uncle may be moving into an office position with the Knights (Ron Horvat).

    More Additions Today:

Sarnia Sting star Nail Yakupov scores a nice one versus Switzerland during their recent U-18 World Championship game. As mentioned in another thread, Yakupov had 1G, 4Assists to end the game with 5 points. Another Yakupov goal vs. Slovakia
