Could be true, but after those two and Carlo, things get VERY thin. Chara might still be hanging around and pitching in, but....
I'm guessing Philly would eat some salary as well.

I do wonder if Krug's departure is going to have a bigger impact on this team than I'm seeing mentioned. Pasta, Marchand, and Bergeron are studs, but the puck needs to get to them, and Krug's possession numbers are solid and he was a big part of their PP. McAvoy and Grzelcyk might step up, but who steps up behind them? Ahco? Vaakanainen? Tall order for some unproven guys.

The hole left by Krug is huge and no one is ignoring that more than Bruins management. And several of those studs had significant off season surgery and I believe will miss the first part of the season? If their season starts off the way I suspect it will - we will see a panic move in the offing. It could be Gostisbehere or OEL.

Seeing all the season standings projections with the Bruins on top of the East.... I don’t know.

Krug gone and no one signed to replace him.

Pasta could miss 3-4 weeks of a condensed schedule, and he’s coming back from significant surgery.

Marchand may still miss a bit, but he’s also coming back from surgery.

Chara still unsigned—and you can argue he’s not as effective, but he still ate 20 min/game.

Kase and Bergeron can’t be counted on to play 56 games.

I think this team could plummet (Sharks-style) for the year. Maybe not bottom of the league, but....

I think we’ve gotten used to the Bruins being East leaders, but things could change quickly. Rask retirement rumors after this year continue as well. And the prospect pool? Studnicka and Ahcan and Swayman are okay, but don’t look like world-beaters.

    Crazy?

^Not too crazy, and they may not be the top, or even second team in the East, but there is one crucial difference between BOS and SJ - goalies.
Rask and Halak were definitely helped by an awesome team last year, but they are certainly better goalies than Martin Jones and whatever else SJ is tossing to the sharks.
So they may fall a bit, but it won't be a full on collapse.

Boston won’t make the playoffs. People are vastly underestimating the weakness of the D and damage done by Rask quitting on the team.

He left the team during a pandemic to be with his sick daughter. The only people saying he quit on the team are the media and unreasonable fans. Teammates were pretty supportive of his decision if memory serves.

Yeah, the loss of Pastrnak time will be huge.
And the division will be super-competitive... that's true too.

But all else will be fine.
    1. re: Krug. Charlie McAvoy is more than capable of running that PP1. And Grzelyck can run PP2. There won't be a significant drop off there.
    2. re: Chara. He hasn't been a massive plus player in recent years, getting Kevan Miller back may adequately replace him if he can't go. Lauzon and Urho are about ready to be quality NHLers.
    3. Coyle & Craig Smith are solid line2/3 players - and the Bruins have a very polished kid in Jack Studnicka that could make the jump.
    4. re: Goalies. I think Rask will be fine. Halak is one of the better back-ups in the full NHL. And they have a G3 in Vladar who might be among the best AHL goalies ready to jump.

I think we'll see six teams finish within 10pts of each other...
The Bs could finish near the top of that group...
Or the bottom of that group...
But they'll be right there with PHI, PIT, NYR, NYI, WAS.
    No doubt.

It'll be so close, I think, that there's no point in pre-preparing self backpatting by saying they might miss the playoffs.
Yes, it's true. They might. It's a tough division.

This is kind of where I am. They aren't the top team in the league anymore, but they're still good. So they will fall back, but they'll be in the thick of the pack.

    For sure.
Patrice has played like a captain for the last 4-5 seasons.
One of my favourite NHL-ers... I think he's close to being a HHOF-er.
He's got 869pts... if he gets to the magic 1000pts, with the Cup and the CDN Gold(s)... he's in... and should be.
The captaincy helps a bit too.

    Career +201.
    That's 3rd highest +/- among active NHLers.
People can poo-poo that stat all they want... but over a career, it's a pretty good tell.

And a 4 time Selke winner helps the case because he's missing those big player trophies. I think he gets in for sure.

Easy choice and I bet he was like a 1A with Chara anyway. All makes great sense.

liking all 3 of these new Bruins acquired in trade, pts. for Hall, Reilly and Lazar in tonites Isles game. So far they all look solid and have given the Bruins some jump! Isles have owned the Bruins this season but played them well these last 2 games. Hall looks good with Krejci feeding him. Reilly gets shots in on the PP. Lazar has given new life to that 4th line! Good moves by Sweeney at a good price! See how it plays over the next few weeks.
