Default Martin Jones trade -- REP

A guy in my league is shopping Jones for a winger. I was interested in him as soon as he was acquired by SJ. He is asking for Hartnell or Hornqvist and a prospect off my farm, he has mentioned Derrick Pouliot and Anders Nilsson. I am thinking I might do it. Am I paying too much for him, is he going to be in a time-share with Stalock? REP given to all thoughtful analysis.

Pretty early to tell about a time-share with Stalock, but dang, Jones sure hasn't done anything to hurt his own stock. Stalock is a career #2 and I don't think they traded Niemi thinking that he was the answer. Gotta believe that Jones is #1 right now. Maybe he's not ready for the kind of minutes that Rask, Holtby or Price get, but I'm bullish on him getting the lion's share of starts and doing very well for you. I think Hartnell's best fantasy seasons are behind him, so if you don't mind giving up a prospect along with him, I think I'd do it. But having said that, I just looked at your G situation. You're not exactly weak in that area! (Frankly, your team looks like a freakin' fantasy all-star team from top to bottom). I'm not sure why the guy is shopping Jones to you and not asking for a goalie. It's not like you really need one.

Quite a few teams in this league have 4 Gs, especially most of my rivals for the title. The guy I am trading with has 4. I do not have 4, and wish to remedy the situation. Plus, like I stated above, I like Jones and trades just opened for the season a week ago. His wingers stink so bad he actually is happy that he drafted Semin. We start 8 wingers in our league and aside from Parise and Perry, he is using guys like Belesky, Cammalleri, Wingels, Brouwer and Semin.

    I completely agree.

I'm always in favor of more goalie depth and would likely make this move if I were in your shoes. Jones looks great (and always has), plus SJ is playing with renewed focus and drive this season.

I would offer Hornqvist, who is a bit of a Band-Aid, straight up for Jones. If he doesn't like that and insists on a prospect, then I would choose Nilsson to go with Hornqvist.

I think Jones has the potential to put together a big season in San Jose. The Sharks seem to have a lot of confidence in him and I think Stalock isn't a big threat. However, while I think the price for Jones is pretty reasonable, you don't really need another goalie. You're pretty stacked with your 3 goalies. I would only trade for Jones if you traded Hartnell (I think he will have a down year with all the forwards in Columbus) and didn't have to trade Pouliot.

I would do the deal also, but ship Hartnell instead of Hornqvist.

Even if Hornqvist is kinda fragile, he's still a better asset than Hartnell IMHO.

I would ship Hartnell for Jones - but give them both if it's necessary to get MJ. The only thing keeping me hesitant is the format of your league and how weighty goalie stats are. In any case, Jones looks like a solid #1. I think at most Stalock takes about 20 -25 starts this year. I've always thought Jones to be the most talented goalie coming out of LA in the last decade - more than Bernier or Quick

Ok, he sent me a formal offer.

    He wants my:
    LW Scott Hartnell
    LW Carl Hagelin
    D Derrick Pouliot (farm eligible)
    G Anders Nilsson (farm eligible)

    For his:
    G Martin Jones
    C Kevin Fiala (farm eligible)

I am tempted to do it, shall I pull the trigger?

I was going to say, wait till Jones loses a game first to temper expectations, but frankly this is a pretty good offer for you, I would pull the trigger on this.

Fiala is a great prospect on his own, so yeah, I say do it.

Done deal. Thanks all. Appreciate the thoughts of the community. Always good to get outside your own head and be able to triangulate your perspective with some other knowledgeable hockey guys. Fingers crossed.

1 goal against in 3 games. I don't think he will slow down very much either. Great scenario for him.
