Re: Mike Smith or Jimmy Howard from here on?
This is a tough question. Next season, I think I might prefer to have Howard because he will at least be in a timeshare on a good team. Smith, on the other hand as you said, is the guy on a pretty awful team. Howard will be a low-end #2 / great #3 goalie in a lot of fantasy leagues next year, but Mike Smith could be waiver wire fodder. Beyond next season, if you just need some contribution I would prefer Smith because I think Mrazek is going to be seeing the bulk of the starts by then.
I'm a big fan of Mrazek and I think Howard's days are numbered, especially with Blashill leading the charge now. We'll see how it shakes out, but give me Howard next season. Smith beyond that. But neither are really going to be good options at that point.
