Should have mentioned that by going forward I mean a 3 year window, not just this year. Maybe Staal is still the obvious choice though..

Yea, Staal is still the easy choice. I honestly don't really even have an argument to favour E. Kane, I guess you could say that he's younger and maybe has more potential? But outside of age, I don't see anything that makes him stand out as being better than Staal, especially if it's only a 3 year window.

Kane is epic for EV strength points and shots and LW is a much thinner position than C. Because his EV point production is so strong, even with poor line mates, there is room for big improvement if line mates or PP production improves.

I prefer Staal as he's already at that next level and is in his prime. The C vs LW argument does make it closer, however, if Staal manages to keep LW eligibility then it gives him the advantage. Furthermore, given that FOW is one of your categories then the C vs LW argument has less value because that 'evens' up the positions more.

I'd also go with Staal here. As others have mentioned, with FOW as one of the categories, that ups Staal's value here as a center notwithstanding that LW might be a more shallow position. Moreover, given that SOGs is a category as well, having a center with high SOG totals is also quite an advantage. There are plenty of centers who can put up big points and contribute to other categories like FOWs etc., but relatively few that also offer high SOG totals on top of all of that (e.g., Crosby, Stamkos, Malkin, Tavares who are otherworldly): Staal is one of them.
