A bad MAF can cause AFR problems (air/fuel ratio) thus the 0171, then the ECU figures out that the MAF (mass air flow sensor) and IAT (intake air temp sensor) are humped as they deteriorate. The IAT is often part of the MAF... easy enought to replace on most cars... though sometimes not too cheap.
