Default Derek's Corner

DerekReese is back for its first instalment of Derek's Corner in 2013. I would like to say its new and improved but its not. It will be the same old crap that everyone seems to love!

I am here to offer free advice. You can ask me anything. I will give you my best honest answer and if I dont know what the hell you are talking about I will make something up! I will answer questions on any subject.

Fire Away!

Nobody likes being caught between a rock and a hard place, but if you were able to pick a side would you go with the rock or the hard place?

Also, what exactly is the hard place?

My wife's jetta was throwing a P0171 fault.
Now it's a P0102 + P0113.
What's causing this?

Obviously you have to add the results togther. 102+113 = 215. A P0215 is more severe than a P0171 because the number is greater. You might want to get this checked before it becomes a P09999999999999999999999999. That would not be good.

Probably your MAF is f--ked... kind of like Pittsburgh in last year's playoffs!

The 0171 is AFR related whereas the 0102 and 0113 are MAF/IAT related. A bad MAF can cause AFR problems (air/fuel ratio) thus the 0171, then the ECU figures out that the MAF (mass air flow sensor) and IAT (intake air temp sensor) are humped as they deteriorate. The IAT is often part of the MAF... easy enought to replace on most cars... though sometimes not too cheap.

I saw your post before you changed it. I immediately thought you were talking about the Penguins.
