LAK announce acquisition of defenceman Keaton Ellerby from FLA for a 5th-round draft choice.

They need a boost on the blueline with Mitchell and Greene out to say the least.

Maybe this will improve Quick's GAA by 0.01

Interesting for me.
I picked up Ellerby in my 60-player Dynasty Cap league.

Getting PIM from defensemen is one of my favourite strategies to use (since defensemen score less than forwards). However, the number of PIM defensemen in the NHL has been declining yearly and this year may be the fewest with Peckham and Bickel being injured & scratched. I mean, how many fighting D are there: Carkner occasionally, Stoner, Engelland... the list isn't very long.

Anyways, this is purely a 7th D man addition for LA.
With Mitchell & Greene out, they've been rolling a consistent 6 (Doughty, Scuderi, Martinez, Muzzin, Voynov, Drewiske)... probably started getting nervous about one of those guys going down and having to throw the 7th guy in.

Also of note: Doughty-Scuderi have been one of the poorer defensive pairings in the NHL this season at -8 & -7. LA looking to shake up the pairs?
Probably the worst even-strength pair in the NHL so far (by plus/minus goals on/against).


As an "off-on-the-tangent" note:
Best defensive pair this year: Salo-Hedman. Smooth pairing.
Hedman should, actually, probably be in early discussions for the Norris with his 13:1 even-strength split for GoalsFor:GoalsAgainst.

I'm not sure about Ellerby's development but from what I gathered he was at least competent defensively. I'm surprised FLA let him go.

Of course I type in Tommy Salo and the forum temporarily crashes at my end. Sounds like it's a no-no of some kind.
