Default Skinner for Grabner + Mueller

I'm a sucker for the underdogs and always hope for the best! I need depth.. but would I be stupid to move Skinner for the pair?! It's for the top league in my sig.. I haven't updated.. I have Kovalev, not Skille and Stempniak not Cogliano.

Bad move? Not bad?

Any advice is appreciated!

Keep Skinner, that offer isn't even close.

What is a player worth?

You have got to have some measuring system to help you with this. It sounds like you don't.

First, understand what the low player in your league scores. For example a 12 team league, using 4 D-men. The low D-man should get about 28 points (82 game season).

Therefore, we're not really racing for the first 28 points. Everyone gets that amount. It's standard. We're racing the points achieved above 28 points. This is what makes the winners in your league.

So.

D-men 28 points
Wingers 38 points
Centre 43 points

You get guys at these levels very moderately. Perhaps you can even get a player like this on the waiver wire.

What's a Crosby worth?
115 points (+72)

Let's do the math. (change the names or the numbers if it helps you to feel better)

Kopitar 80 points +37
Benn 70 points +27
Skinner 65 points +27

= +91

So. In most ordinary scoring format leagues, I'll trade the three fancy pieces for the elite piece. I'm making the assumption that if I work hard, I now have some soft spots on my roster to rebuild and make stronger. I trust myself to work hard.

This doesn't factor in age, and age is certainly an issue. Do projections for five years for all the players in the equation. Longer than that is unrealistic. Consider Lecavalier or Green...

Making the right decisions on these guys is critical.

So, back to the original question.

Skinner. You have your beliefs. If you don't love him, that's fine, but I think someone in your pool is willing to pay for him as an elite prospect. (that's prospect, not elite in the same regard as a Crosby or Malkin.

I'll call him for 65 points, or rather pay for him at 65 point price. I would take the risk on this kid (I've been wrong before and will be wrong again).

Grabner. He's old enough now to be considered early prime. What you see is what you get. Upside is 30 goals. He hasn't had 20 assists in a season see... before he was being recorded on hockeydb.com, so since he's 15 years old (something like that). Therefore, I see him as a 40-45 point guy with career years in the 50 point range. Not every year will be a career year. He'll not be an easy guy to trade.

Mueller. This is a guy you should be looking to acquire on the cheap, if you like him. He's been brained hard enough, that perhaps the next time his career is over. Two franchises have allowed him to slip through their fingers. I'll not dispute talent with you, it's other factors. His trade value will not rise until Christmas of 2013. Managers will be afraid of his health issues. So, once you got him, you got him.

I'm guessing that 50% to 75% of the managers in your league would like to have Skinner.

Everything is not always as it seems. Anyone with a brain, knows that the Sedin's were long pegged as 70 to 80 point guys. At a dramatically old age, they suddenly broke through on a new and Super Elite level. Highly unexpected.

Anyway, I'll not be trading my Skinner for Mueller/Grabner. Grabner is hardly useful. Mueller is too injury prone to suit me.

Yeah, that would be a step back. No go.

That's much more tempting, but tbh I wonder if you could get even more for Skinner. That awesome rookie year is still in pretty much everyone's mind. He was also at a PPG before his injury last season, as well.

I don't like either of the deals at all - for Vanek its pretty much a lateral move in terms of upside, and Skinner is much younger so in a keeper it doesn't make sense to me.
