I've been approached about trading my Kovalchuk for Chara. At first response, it would be difficult to trade away an elite scorer. In looking closer, I think I have to make this trade.
For skaters, scoring categories are G, A, +/-, PIM, Hits. The adavantage goes to Kovalchuk in goals, assists are close, and the advantage goes to Chara in +/-, PIM, and Hits. The roster spot at forward would be filled by one of Huberdeau, Kesler (when healthy), Hanzal, etc. Adding Chara would push one of Burns, Hedman, or Schenn to the bench. Thoughts?

No way in a keeper league. Burns is injured and should be on te bench anyway. Hits and PIM are easy to fill kovy is gonna impress this season.

Let's assume neither will be kept and focus on this year. Without getting into too much detail, I'd be better off keeping other players as Kovalchuk/Chara would cost me first round draft picks to hold while others would cost mid to late picks.

Suprised, I thought this was a no brainer. PIM and hits are easy to replace but you may take a hit on G, A, and +/-. I consider all scoring categories to be equal since they are weighted that way. Kovalchuk contributes well to 2 out of 5 and can be a +/- detriment. Chara contributes well to 4 out of 5 categories. +/- can be very difficult to find as well.

I would make this trade. Your scoring settings make Chara extremely valuable. You've got high-end G,A in Hossa, Perry, Patches, Thornton, RNH to compensate for the loss of Kovy.
You're +/- isn't going to be strong, nor is your D particularly strong. Adding Chara addresses both. Cheers |
